Ralph Helmrich lived a full complicated life that he shared to his friends and family through stories. Ralph's stories varied, covering different places and times. Anyone that knew him would immediately recognize and remember the stories he told. From his cat Rooty-toot and the stud pants, to watching the St. Louis arch being built while commuting. He was as well known for the machines he made as he was for his stories, specializing in aerosol engineering. He designed dozens of machines for a variety of different applications. One of his specialties was pepper spray, working extensively in the chemical defense spray field over many years. His name is on 16 patents related to the aerosol can industry. He did extensive consulting with both Fortune 500 Companies and start ups in Military, Food, Cosmetics, Personal Care and Novelties. With over 50 years of engineering experience and a vision to make the impossible, possible, he would get the job done with a glad heart. The name Ralph Helmrich was synonymous with a beautiful Abyssinian Cat in the Cat Fanciers Association. He helped produce more than 20 cats that were titled DM(Distinctive Merit), 3 National Winners and over 130 Grand Champions. With his wife Karen, Abyssinian was elevated and perfected in their corner of the world and beyond. In 2004 an opportunity rose to sell his current business. Karen and Ralph decided to take it and spend the next six years traveling across the United States in an RV with their children, Leah and Byron. Once Ralph retired from canning and aerosols, he needed something new to do. Ralph and his daughter Leah got into the same hobby - making jewelry. They bought kits, took classes, read books, experimented and learned together. After accomplishing some proficiency, the natural next step was looking for an outlet to sell their creations. A friend mentioned there was a new online platform dedicated to handmade creators. It was 2007 and of course, the friend was referring to Etsy. The Helmrich family opened their Etsy Shop in October 2007 with 5 jewelry listings and had the incredible luck of selling a bracelet on the very first day. They were hooked! In the coming months, they sold on average, 1 piece of jewelry a week, and then 1 a day and then more. Ralph particularly enjoyed the skill and precision that went into high quality jump rings and jewelry components. The customers loved Ralph for his advice that he freely gave, the personalized care he gave to every order, and the expert handling of their purchases. Their shop is currently 16th out of 2.1 million shops world wide. Ralph got the flu in January 2020. The doctors thought he was on the mend a month later after a short visit to the hospital. When he came home, he had a physical therapist helping him get his strength back. A week later he took a turn for the worse and did not want to continue any treatment. He passed away at home Monday evening, February 10th, with his wife Karen by his side. Since his friends and family are wide spread, this site will serve as a virtual memorial where memories and stories can be shared and cherished by all. A private service will be held by the family at a later date when Ralph's ashes will be scattered along his favorite trout stream.

So... where do I start. I've known him since I was still a baby. My grandmother and Karen are friends and we used to visit them. I grew up with leah and byron. Yes we lived overseas but they always felt like family when we were there. I remember that when I was young I always thought Ralph was a bit strange... different. He was always in his garden house busy with I don't know what. Always seemed in a different world. As I grew older and I learned more about him and learned to know him better that all changed. As he grew older he transformed into a whole different men. He talked more and was more involved in the activities we did. When he and leah got into the jewelry he was proud of his Jump ring machine invention and couldn't stop talking about it. For the first time he let me in his world and showed me everything he was working on. He started to teach me how to make earrings and how to make beautiful things with beads. Unfortunately we didn't visit them often anymore. I was occupied with school and the distance was just to big. I never realized that he was already getting a bit older... until the last time we went there and he was in an early stage of dementia. He was less outgoing... more back into his own world... My grandma and I where there to learn how to make the jewelry. Because the garden house wasn't big enough anymore for the huge store they've grown into. Even though he was less outgoing I could see him revive when teaching me what to do. For me it was a lot to take in in just two weeks and he noticed that. So he went and made me all kinds of tools to make my life a lot easier. He used to be in the basement for hours just to make me a new tool. Adjusting it till it was perfect. Ralph learned me a lot. Not only jewelry. But also that some people are different. Everyone has something making there life a bit more difficult. But seeing him grow so much made me happy even proud! I will be forever grateful that he let me in his world, pushing his own boundries to do so. Seeing him getting social. And learning me that everything is possible. As long as you work hard. Or find a way to make it yourself more easy 😉

When I took this photo during Christmas 2019 I never dreamed it would be the last picture I'd take of Ralph. It's certainly not the last time I'll think of him. He was one of the most hardworking men I've ever known. That work ethic left him with an incredibly large amount of engineering knowledge in his head. Sometimes you couldn't be completely sure where that knowledge ended and a fish story started, but when Ralph said he'd do something I could always trust him to follow through. Ralph was an exceptional person, and with his death the world is a less precise place.

The system didn't let me edit the captions on the photos. The collage is of me and Baki - some of my favorite photos. The "wedding" pictures I was honored to be asked to photograph Karen and Ralph's vow renewal in Cabo San Lucas in 2006. These are my favorite 3 from that day. Karen posted her favorite where Ralph was ironing her dress. It was a special event and celebration no matter what came before or after. I cherish the memories of the entire trip.
