Mementos

He was not just an extraordinary actor but an even more extraordinary human being.

Pradeep Rawat was a force unlike any other in Indian cinema — a man whose deep, resonant voice and towering screen presence could fill a theatre with dread, yet whose warm smile and genuine humility made everyone around him feel at ease. Born on 21 January 1952 in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, he began his working life as a bank clerk at UCO Bank before the pull of performance proved impossible to resist. He made his way to Mumbai, spent his early struggling years living with a young Salman Khan — the two bonding over a shared passion for fitness — and quietly laid the groundwork for one of Indian cinema's most remarkable careers. His first defining moment came on television. Cast as Ashwatthama in B.R. Chopra's legendary Mahabharat (1988–1990), Rawat became a household name almost overnight. An entire generation grew up seeing him as the immortal warrior cursed to walk the earth — a role he inhabited with mythic authority. Film stardom followed across multiple languages. In Ashutosh Gowariker's Oscar-nominated Lagaan (2001), he brought ferocious loyalty and swaggering charm to Deva Singh Sodhi, the Sikh sepoy whose allegiance shifts the match's fate. Three years later, S.S. Rajamouli's Sye (2004) introduced him to Telugu audiences as the fearsome Bikshu Yadav — a performance so commanding it swept the Filmfare, Santosham, and Nandi Awards for Best Villain. Then came Ghajini (2005), the Tamil thriller in which his portrayal of the ruthless antagonist Dharmatma was so searing that he was called back to reprise it opposite Aamir Khan in the 2008 Hindi remake. Over four decades and more than 200 films — spanning Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Nepali, and Marathi — Rawat became one of Indian cinema's rarest talents: a true pan-India actor who needed no single language to tell his story. Known to colleagues as a disciplined, well-mannered person who always had a smile ready, he built lasting friendships on every set he walked onto. Pradeep Rawat passed away on 4 September 2026 in Bhiwandi, Mumbai, after a courageous battle with blood cancer. He is survived by his wife Kalyani and their son Vikramaditya. He leaves behind a legacy measured not in awards alone, but in the generations of filmgoers who will never forget the moment he walked onto the screen.

There is a lot of pain, and the film industry has lost a very big actor, a very intelligent actor and a truly talented performer. But he will always live in everyone's memories. He will always be remembered.

He was extremely dedicated and fearless as an actor. Pradeepji played the title role in 'Ghajini.' I think this was one of the most striking screen villains in our cinema. The film wouldn't have worked without him. Earlier, in 'Lagaan,' he brought his own flavor to Deva Singh Sodhi. I don't think anyone could have played Sodhi with such swag. He was a versatile actor. It's sad to hear of his passing.
