Words were prescious to Pontus, so they should not be wasted. Only talk about things that you are interested in. Don't speculate, rather try to find out how things work. Share your knowledge when you have learned. And when others talked to him about what was important to them, that should be remembered. If you asked him a question and he did not know, you would get an email a week later with an answer. Or when you met him after a year or two, he would begin the conversation: "Last time you said...". But then jokes were important too, something to throw you off a little bit. With a slight, sly smile.

Pontus was a wonderful father, husband, and grandfather. I will always remember his sense of humor, and love for his family. He will be remembered fondly.

I remember the last time when Pontus visited us here in Helsinki. It was on the Finnish Independence Day (Dec 6th). Even though the weather was stormy, he had ridden his bike out to our place. Later in the evening on his way home, he ran into a tree that had fallen across the bike path. Fortunately, he didn't get hurt badly. His enthusiam for biking amazed me, and his achievements were something to admire. Therefore, I often think of him when I'm out biking, and if I'm feeling wimpy, I remind myself that Pontus would just laugh at me. I also appreciated his sense of humor, which could be bizarre at times. For example, once when we were eating salad, he asked me if I knew how vegetarians get their protein. The punch line was: insects (in the lettuce for example). The last time I saw Pontus was on Easter Sunday while doing a FaceTime call with Debbie. I'll missing having conversations with him.

What a surprise to get to know Debbie when we were in graduate school together! When you share an office with someone for a couple of years you get to know them pretty well. Before I met Pontus I pretty much knew what an interesting and kind person he was just by listening to Debbie's family stories. My whole life I have had chronic liwer back pain so when I found out that Pontus was a pain specialist I asked him for advice. I was only in my 30s but I thought I was getting old. He seemed to look right through me and I will never forget his words, "Kathy, you're not getting any younger. You need to work your core muscles or you will always have pain." To this day when I have been too long away from working my core muscles and yoga I have pain and guess who's voice echos in my mind?? I'm so grateful for my friendship with Debbie and getting to know Pontus. Love to all of you as you share memories and know that Pontus lives in you forever.
