Phil was my uncle who, appeared in my life when I was young, in between many of his mysterious adventures! He was the youngest of 4 children born to Betty and Jack of Chapel Road, Hoylake. His siblings were Tony, Brenda(my mum) and Jean who is still with us. The story I was always told was to never ask where he had been because you do not need to know! I did find out about some of his many adventures in later life and there were many of them! Phil enjoyed his life to the full always doing what he wanted and how he wanted. He was a free spirit! Enjoy your final journey into the sunset. With fond memories from Helen and your other nieces and nephews and their families. X

It's no exaggeration to say Phil was the friendliest, most cheerful, and interesting person I've ever met. I feel so lucky that my siblings and I had him in our lives as we were growing up. He was and always will be the best example of how to be a human being.

In Haworth, 2022. So pleased you finally got to Brönte country, after so many years of being fascinated by their lives. I’m sorry you never made it back again to get to Top Witherns. I’ll make a trip there especially for you this year. There’s a big hole left by your departure, but I imagine you on a boat somewhere smiling as you sail off on your last great adventure. I can only hope to meet you there someday and hear all about it, in that unique way you have of telling a great story. I don’t have words to sum up what you meant to me and so many others, and how much you were loved, far more than you knew. Or perhaps you knew, but were so humble that you never let on. You will be so terribly missed. And always remembered. Thank you for being a true friend. All my love, Loz
Phil

I am extremely lucky that Phil excepted the responsibility of being my God Farther. As you would expect from Phil, he did an outstanding job and I am forever grateful for the happy memories we shared together. Te Soves Misto Phil Rye x

Spain, 2021. It's so hard to put into words how much you meant to me. You were a constant present in my life for so many years. It all started with Nick Drake. You wanted to know who was singing the song you heard on the sound system in Slinky's, a song you wanted to know the name of for 20+ years. What can I say Phil. You were like a father to me, there with guidance and advice, there to listen, there to talk. There at my wedding, by mum's side when she was dying. You were always there, and there are no words for how important you were in shaping the course of my life. I remember when we sailed to Holyhead on Sisu, only to both pass out drunk on deck when we got there! The nights we sat talking, until all hours, listening to John Martyn, Nick Drake, and 'Mongolian Throat Music', an acquired taste that you had taped from some foreign radio station years ago, probably on board a ship. Our Trips to Portugal, the hours we spent catching up on the phone, and a friendship that I'll cherish for the rest of my life. I love you Phil, and I'm so grateful that you were a part of my life. You're one of a kind, strong, independent until the very end, warm, charming, and loveable. Did I mention humble? And your million-dollar smile? Kushti Bok Phil. Te Soves Misto. Marce.

Finding it really difficult to put into words to express how sad it is to lose Phil. In his presence you felt truly listened to and understood, and I loved to hear him wax lyrical about the Bröntes, Joseph Conrad, travel, LFC and the best boozers on either side of the Mersey. It was a joy to introduce him to family or friends as you knew he had the abilty to see off any interaction with ease and charm; his generous and empathetic character indicative of a life stuffed to the gills with enthusiasm for knowledge and experience. A fearless adventurer and a bright-eyed raconteur. Go easy mate xx
