Peter Michael Sullivan was born in Encino, California on August 5th, 1964 to Mary Elizabeth Sullivan and James Frederick Sullivan. At age 5, he moved to Minneapolis with his mother and siblings. His creative gifts led him to study and work as a youth at the renowned Minneapolis Children's Theater Company and School, where he became a lead sound technician in his teens. At age 17, he was hired as a sound designer for the director's cut of the Academy Award winning film The Boat ( Das Boot) and would go on to be a highly sought after sound designer, editor, and mixer in theater, film, and television for the next few decades, with credits including such acclaimed films as Braveheart, The Abyss, and the Kill Bill series, among many others. Peter combined his professional craft and love of adventurous global travel to create a massive sound library that contributed to sound effects in numerous films and television shows beyond the projects he personally worked on. He was also passionate about photography. His signature black and white works were exhibited in Asia, where he lived for several years. To his friends, Peter had a great sense of humor, a generous heart, strong opinions, an appetite for a good argument, and unusual compassion for the vulnerable. He was also a complex spiritual seeker, exploring Buddhism and later rediscovering Christianity. He devoted the last years of his life to his faith. Late on the night of June 20, 2022, Peter lost his battle with cancer and passed peacefully in hospice in Bethany, Oklahoma. He is survived by his siblings John, Andrew and Jennifer, and half siblings Adrienne and Jim. Funeral are being held graveside for family and close community. Oh, Peter...gone far too young, too soon. During my early years at Soundelux, he was one of the funniest people I got to know, and he stood up for me when I was facing some challenges from an extremely toxic supervisor. My time there -- and my well being -- improved considerably after that, and I'll always be grateful to Peter for it. I'm sorry we lost touch with each other after he left the country.

My condolences to Peter's family and loved ones. He was a tremendously intelligent and talented person. I appreciate that Jennifer posted some of his photographs here. I admired his ability to see the beauty and serenity is colorful and often chaotic places. I am grateful for the many things I learned with and from Peter during my 13 years with him. I learned about seeing and hearing, photography and sound recording, travel and being open to spontaneous opportunities, Buddhism and weathering the ups and downs of life. Peter, I hope you Rest In Peace.

He was they guy in the booth next to me. My heart goes out to Andrew, Jenny and all his siblings. Ted Cooks ribs, Carling Black Label tacos, shawarma dripping with falafel, biting his hand in a fit of excitement. Details were important. A 280z, with a trailer hitch. Who know you could attach one? Pulling a UHaul halfway across the country. A trip to the seashore to record the sound of the ocean. It first sounded like a brush swirling around in a toilet bowl but when he was finished it created the perfect sense of place for a production of Twelfth Night. I also recall a few very loud door slams. We parted ways on 1985 or maybe 1986, almost 40 years ago. He's left his imprint on me and I'm grateful he was a part of my life. Rich Rummel

Among his countless other accomplishments, Peter took the photos for my CD titled "Train Going Nowhere." I told Peter I wanted a cover image that would blow peoples' socks off when they saw it. I picked the locations and Peter used a standard 35mm camera. Though I thought what he did was fine, Peter was unhappy with his work. He went out by himself the next day with a huge box camera and took these amazing photos. Same locations, but the shots are deeper and mysterious. It looks like the back roads of Kansas though it's North Hollywood. I was always grateful that Peter literally went the extra mile. Later he came by my house to take photos of me that were published in both Alternative Press and Keyboard magazines. We last cut sound together around 2015, and since then I've always assumed he was still in his editing room, plugging away. R.I.P.
