Peter S. Roon
May 9th, 1953-August 6, 2025
Peter S. Roon, 72, of Portage, Michigan, passed away peacefully on August 6th, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on May 9, 1953, in Kalamazoo, Pete was a proud lifelong resident who embraced his hometown’s spirit and community.
On August 11th,1973, Pete married the love of his life, Deborah Wilson, and together they built a loving family. He was a proud father to Jennifer, Matthew, and Logan, and he cherished his family dearly.
After graduating from WMU in 1975, Pete began his career working alongside his father and brothers at Roon Construction Company before later serving as project manager for Architectural Glass and Metals. He was admired for his skill, work ethic, and leadership. Pete dedicated much of his life to construction management and commercial estimating. His craftsmanship and pride in work left a lasting legacy in the community he loved.
A devoted fan of the Western Michigan Broncos, Pete was especially excited for his grandson Ty to be playing for the baseball team. Sports were always close to his heart-he was a lifelong supporter of the Detroit Tigers and a passionate follower of women’s softball as both a spectator and coach. He even was a proud certified CDL driver for the KVCC cougar softball team, driving them to games both near and far.
Pete was known for his infectious love of life, his appreciation for good music, and the joy he found in the company of family and friends. He was always proud to share a song from his lead role of Harold Hill in Portage Northern High School’s musical, The Music Man, or laugh as he told stories of the adventures he experienced with those who knew him best. Pete leaves behind abundant memories of laughter, warmth, and togetherness with his lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Maxine Roon, and his brothers, Jack and Tom Roon. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Deborah Roon; his daughter, Jennifer Tomlinson (Jack Mills); and his sons, Matthew Roon (Cindy), and Logan Roon ( Brittany). Pete’s legacy shines brightest in his cherished grandchildren: Ty Tomlinson, Hannah Roon, and Lillian Roon.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Red Cross-whose gift of blood granted the family precious extra time with Pete-or to your local Humane Society, reflecting his love for his beloved family pets. Friends and family will gather for a celebration of Pete’s life at a later date. We invite all who loved him to share stories and condolences by visiting his memorial website at: https://www.mykeeper.com/PeterRoon

What is your earliest memory of Peter?
Peter and I are first cousins. My favorite memories are with Pete and uncle Bill going to ball games. Watching his older brother Tom who was quite a bomber. We had many family get togethers and often saw our grandma Roon on Sundays in Hopkins. Pete was always on my “stop and see him list”with Deb when returning to the Kazoo area. I am afraid I missed a lot though being in Colorado during our high school years. I didn’t know he sang in The Music Man. But we always had fun together. He was a very nice person who dearly lived his family. See you at the next ReRoonion Pete!

I was so sad to hear the news of Pete's passing. Some of my favorite childhood memories were of the times we spent with Pete, Debbie, Jen, Matt and Logan. Whether we were at our house on Spanish Road, or over at their house, we always had the best time until Dan started crying when it was time for the party to end! Pete had such a warm and loving personality - he was a person that I loved seeing every time I had the chance to, even when years and years had passed since the last time we'd been together. I'm sending love from all of the Mulders to the Roons as you are saying goodbye to Pete. I know he is up there with my Mom and they will be keeping a close eye on us as we move forward.

Brad Rayle Aug. 10, 2025, 8:32 a.m. PDT Ann and my hearts are heavy and sad, and our thoughts are with Debbie and the kids and grandkids regarding their loss. Pete was the first friend I made when I moved to Kalamazoo when we were both 8. That started a long and lasting friendship through the years. Sports, high school, college, weddings jobs and on and on. Throughout that friendship, we laughed and cried at the events in our lives, as he lived his with every bit of energy he could put into it. I know he’s up there now telling stories about his grandkids and kids, and laughing that great laugh, and checking to see when the Tigers play today. RIP and love Brother Pete. You were and will always be one of the good ones. Brad and Ann Rayle
