Humour is power and a force for good because if you can laugh, particularly at yourself, you are some way to being able to make sense of things.

Dame Penelope Anne Constance Keith — known throughout her life simply as "Penny" — was one of Britain's most beloved and enduring actresses, a woman whose cut-glass voice, impeccable comic timing, and quiet warmth made her a household name across three generations. Born on 2 April 1940 in Sutton, Surrey, she grew up in Clacton-on-Sea and south London, raised largely by her mother Connie, whom she adored and described as a "rock of love." At just six years old she was sent to a Catholic convent boarding school in Seaford, East Sussex — a happy chapter, despite her not being Catholic — and it was there that she first fell in love with performing. Turned away by the Central School of Speech and Drama for being, at 5'10", simply too tall, she enrolled at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art while working evenings at the Hyde Park Hotel to support herself. She made her professional debut in 1959 at Chesterfield Civic Theatre and spent the following years honing her craft in British repertory theatre before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963. Those years taught her the classical rigour she would carry through a lifetime on stage. It was television that made Penny a national treasure. From 1975, as Margo Leadbetter — the magnificently snobbish yet secretly tender neighbour in the BBC sitcom The Good Life — she captured the hearts of nearly 24 million viewers. Two BAFTA Awards followed in swift succession: Best Light Entertainment Performance in 1977 and Best Actress in 1978 for The Norman Conquests. Her second television triumph, To the Manor Born (1979–1981), drew audiences exceeding 20 million, cementing her place in the canon of great British comedy. Yet Penny was far more than a sitcom star. She performed Shakespeare, Shaw, Coward, and Wilde throughout her career, and in 1978 she married Rodney Timson, a policeman eight years her junior who later became her devoted manager. They made their home at Mousehill Manor in Milford, Surrey, where they lived for over fifty years. In 1988 they adopted twin sons, completing a family life she treasured above all else. Her service to others was extraordinary. She succeeded Lord Olivier as President of the Actors' Benevolent Fund in 1989 and held that role for nearly thirty years. In 2002 she was appointed High Sheriff of Surrey, and in the 2014 New Year Honours she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to the arts and charity. Dame Penelope Keith died peacefully at her Surrey home on 29 June 2026, aged 86, after living with cancer. She was survived by her husband Rodney and their two sons. That evening, theatres across London's West End dimmed their lights in her memory — a quiet, luminous farewell to a woman who had given so much light to others.

I keep watching the only season of Sweet Sixteen, over and over. She was wonderful in it. It was a great sitcom that should have run forever.

She would go down in the hall of fame, in fact I think she will be remembered forever.
