Paul Sandler, M.D., of blessed memory, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by Maryjane, his loving wife of 54 years, his children, Lisa, David and Jocelyn, Suzanne and Scott, and Sarah, his adoring grandchildren, Jack, Will, Emmett, Rafi, and Vivian, and his brother, Maurice and sister, Marlene. Dr. Sandler was a scion of the Arizona medical community, practicing Nephrology for nearly 50 years after an early career in Pediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology. He passed, much as he lived, caring for his family and sharing his love. Paul was widely known for his tremendous intellect and compassion, often preceded by his trademark laughter and whistling. He valued family above all else and thought of his community of medical professionals and patients as extended members of his family. Born in New York in 1939, Dr. Sandler was an innovative practitioner, with a love of learning and teaching that reached well beyond medicine. He served as Chief of Pediatric Nephrology as a Major in the US Army at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and as Associate Professor of Pediatric Nephrology at Georgetown University. Paul and Maryjane made their home in Phoenix in 1977, after which he founded Arizona Kidney Disease and Hypertension Center. Although landlocked in Arizona, he swam miles in the pool each day. He was an avid surfer from the time he lifeguarded as a teenager in Long Beach, NY. The joy he derived from surfing lives on in his children and grandchildren, as does his emphasis on the importance of family. Surf’s up, Papa Paul. Contributions in Paul’s memory may be made to the Martin Pear Jewish Community Center in the Valley of the Sun, Scottsdale, Arizona (https://www.mykeeper.com/profile/PaulSandlerMD/).

I remember Paul. When my nephrology group was faced with a Dilemma of finding a dialysis center for our patient from the Apache junction area. The only provider of dialysis service at the time was the former sameriitan hospital. He help us set up East Valley dialysis service and taught Ken Johnson and David Richert how to run a dialysis program grateful for his help

He was such a mensch. No matter how many times I called him with health questions about my parents, he just listened and was so patient. He always helped me. And then he called me back a few days later to check on them. A doll that man, pure and simple. RIP Papa Paul

Fond memories of him. I will not forget the humorous side to him either: Six pairs of glasses and as many hospital badges all at once.
