Paul Jones was born July 10, 1946, in La Fayette, Alabama. He was the oldest of four children born to Paul Wilmer and Kathryn Henderson Jones.  He passed away unexpectedly on April 1, 2025, in Congress, Arizona.  A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Paul lived a life filled with love, laughter, music, and cherished memories.

Paul is survived by his devoted wife, Voni, whom he joyfully married six years ago in a ceremony surrounded by family and friends.  His incredible legacy continues through his three sons and four grandchildren.  Anthony and his wife Josephine are parents to their son Colin and daughter Maeve.  Joshua and his wife Jenna are parents to their daughter Addison.  Andrew and his wife Michele are parents to their son Otis.  Paul is also survived by his former wife, Nancy Jakes, the mother of his children, and his sisters, Kathy and Janice.  Paul’s brother, Robert, and his parents preceded him in death.

After growing up in rural Alabama and Mississippi, Paul moved to Arizona in 1967 to attend college.  Shortly before graduation, he accepted a position with a church and moved to Southern California.  This began a period of personal and academic growth alongside dedicated church service, leading to moves for Paul and his growing family throughout the state.  Paul and family eventually moved back to Arizona in 1982, where he continued serving in various capacities with different churches.  His devoted life of Christian service eventually brought Paul to the Yarnell area and the Yarnell Community Presbyterian Church.  Since the early 1990’s, he has been an active member of the Yarnell/Peeples Valley communities and a dedicated minister in his beloved church.  In appreciation of his efforts, Paul was recognized by the Grand Canyon Presbytery and the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors for his leadership during the recovery efforts after the Yarnell Hill Fire in 2013.

Paul modeled his life on a scripture passage from Micah: “What does the Lord require of you but to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”  Known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering support for family and friends, Paul had a passion for bringing people together.  He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him and will always be remembered for his warmth, spirit, and the love he shared.

In honor of his memory, the family invites friends to celebrate Paul’s life at a memorial service to be held on Saturday, April 19th at 10:00am at the Yarnell Community Presbyterian Church.  Light refreshments will be served afterward.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Yarnell Community Presbyterian Church in his name.

I’m not quite sure how to write a tribute to my brother Paul. There is more in my heart than I feel able to share. Because Paul was the oldest sibling, I cannot remember a time when he was not a part of my life. He was an only child for six years and then I came along. I don’t think he ever knew how much I admired and loved him. What an older brother I had! He was an honor student, class favorite, and in the band and Beta Club. He was in numerous talent shows and directed the choir in the church where we grew up, all before he graduated from high school. He was like Rocky- Road Ice Cream- he had it all! After graduating High School, he went to Clarke College and then on to Grand Canyon College. Little did I know how the west would capture his heart and Alabama become a distant memory. To say he loved the West was an understatement. I should have guessed it would be that way, since growing up with him, the only thing he would ever let me play with him and our cousin who lived with us was “Cowboys and Indians.” I was always the Indian and he would capture me, tie me to a tree and ride off into the sunset! In 1968, we made our first trip to Arizona for a visit. His oldest son, A.J. was about 6 months old. What a joy! Of all Paul’s accomplishments in life, he would say without hesitation, his three boys, A.J., Josh, and Andy, were the greatest serendipities (unexpected blessings) of his life. Each one became a success in life and are devoted husbands to their wives and to their children. I will always be grateful that Paul received a personal serendipity from the Lord late in his life when Voni became his wife. Although, they had only 6 years together, she was a comfort and blessing to him, and my sister and I grew to love her quiet spirit and love for our brother. Paul was very blessed during his life to have friends who loved him and saw him through some of the most difficult times. I will always be grateful that he was loved and cared for until the end of his life. I was so blessed to call him my brother. So, here’s to you- Mr. Rocky-Road, from your kid sister, Kathy, Plain Vanilla: You’re best! I love you with all my heart. See you in glory.

Paul was my big brother…he was 10 years older than me…so I remember our growing up mostly through pictures I have when he still lived at home in Alabama. I do remember being proud to have him for my brother…to stand in his light just by virtue of that. He always shined!! He had a beautiful voice and was always invited to sing somewhere in our community…and the most beautiful handwriting!! I got to know my brother as an adult…and it seemed like 10 years was nothing anymore! We had great conversations…he listened when I talked…laughed at my shenanigans…cared about the things that were important to me. Every time he called and I answered the phone, he always said “Hey, baby sister!” I’m sure gonna miss that! Paul loved people…loved his family and his community. A part of Alabama fell in love with Arizona…and he gave himself to it full, without reservation. One day, when I get to heaven too, I know I’ll see his smiling face…and hear once again, “Hey, baby sister!”…and everything will be right again…

TRIBUTE TO PAUL JONES I was privileged to know Paul as my brother-in-law, my brother in Christ, and as a fellow minister of the Gospel for almost 50 years. I am thankful to God for the times that we were able to spend together and for the memories I have of him. Here are just a few things I remember with incredible joy about Paul Jones... • His incredible craftmanship and work ethic- He largely put himself through college and seminary doing painting and carpentry on the side. He often worked in expensive, high-end homes because he developed a reputation for excellent craftmanship and reliability. • His gentle spirit- He was one of the most loving, kind, and gentle man I have ever known. He always trying to encourage those around him and build everyone he met up. • His love and dedication to his family- His love for his wife Voni was so evident, and he especially loved to talk about his three boys and his grandchildren and what they were accomplishing in life. He was so proud of each of them. • His love for Christ’s church- He loved his church family deeply and tried to serve them sacrificially. Whenever we got together and shared about our ministries, he was always bragging about what an incredible fellowship Yarnell Community Presbyterian Church was. • His laugh- He had a quick laugh that would sometimes just burst out suddenly. His eyes would sparkle, and the biggest smile come across his face. • His love of music- He started out his ministerial life as a Minister of Music but ended up as a Pastor, of course, but he still loved music across his entire life and shared his love for music with his family and friends. I am especially grateful for the times I was privileged to hear him sing and play. • His victorious attitude in life- He was never bitter or resentful even when life dealt him heavy blows. He was a wonderful example of Christian forgiveness. • His love of the West- He was raised in the deep South but moved to Arizona while attending college and fell in love with the West and made it his home for the rest of his life. With deep gratitude to the Lord, Randy Kuhn

What a gift this man was to me. My Papa Paul. We didn’t share blood, but that never mattered. He was one of the very best men I’ve ever known, someone who showed me the love of Jesus my whole life. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, service, and sacrifice; and I’m so thankful the Lord saw it fit for him to be my grandpa. I love you Papa Paul. Can’t wait for another ATV ride in Heaven someday. Love, Hannah B

Though distant, I feel the loss. Most Remarkable  Paul Jones When someone most remarkable, Does lose his place in time. A bit of me too, disappears, And life is out of rhyme. There's too, a joy filled sadness, When one I love is gone. As precious happy memories, Forever linger on. Yet still there's something missing, As I, life's courses chart. An unknown empty void of sorts, That's found within my heart. So I take one moment every day, Remembering my friend. Acknowledging too, a life well lived, Beginning to its end. For what he left behind is real, A legacy of love. So now that he has Heaven found, I'm blessed from high above. My loss is Heaven’s Gain! Paul Jones Precious and Unique David  04/04/2025
