Patricia Braunlich
2021
2021
Patricia Braunlich, nee Deeney, was born in Fayetteville, NC, where her father was serving as an army dentist. She was raised in Perry, NY. Her life-long love of music developed at an early age, as her violin teacher, Mrs. Regis, lived just down the street. She earned her Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Violin Performance at Catholic University in Washington DC. While earning her Master’s, she went to Aspen and met a medical student, who helped her get a one-year position as a librarian at Stanford. She then played in the National Ballet Orchestra, and it was there that she reconnected with her violin teacher from Catholic University, Helmut Braunlich. Patty and Helmut were married in 1974. Their two sons, Kurt and Martin, were born in Silver Spring MD. Kurt now lives with his wife, Kate, and Patty’s step-grandson, Ben, and grandson, Henry Marshall, in Poolesville, MD. Martin lives in Eugene OR.
Patty began teaching violin in Bethesda, MD and taught some 35 years. After she and Helmut retired in 2008, they moved to Eugene, OR. Helmut passed away in 2013. After arriving in Eugene, Pat began playing in string quartets at Min Wilmarth’s, where she met Rob Voss. They eventually became life partners and bought a home together in Eugene.
Pat had three siblings: Kathy, Kevin & Marshall. She is survived by her sons, her sister, her sister-in-law, Marie-Elena, her grandchildren, her niece, Bethanie, and her three nephews: Chris, Drew & Patrick. She was predeceased by her two brothers, her father, Dr. Raymond W. Deeney, and her mother, Audrey Marr Deeney.

I was thinking about Pat this morning after not having been in touch with her since she left Bethesda in 2008. I found this memorial website indicating that she had died in Jan 2021. The photographs and messages of condolence as well as the obituary narrative of her life helped me to connect with the many fond memories of Pat and Helmut and Kurt and Martin. Back in the 80s and 90s we gathered often together in our respective homes, sharing our life events and love of music. Pat was indeed an inspired and loving wife, mother, teacher and friend. And news that Pat had found a life partner to share life’s joys with these past years is welcome news indeed. Thank you, Rob, for posting a bit of your story together.

I'm very sorry to hear that Pat has passed away. I was one of her violin students back in Bethesda in 2008. Her teaching rekindled my love for the violin, motivated me to no end after many years. She also gave me good advice to pick an instrument to last a lifetime. For the next 12 years, my studies and several moves kept me distanced from the violin. In the middle of the pandemic I decided to pick it up again in my new home in Argentina and started lessons last month. I was looking through my old violin notebook and found a post-it note with her email, and thought I would reach out to her and share how excited I am to return to the violin and how my new teacher has pointed to the great technique I had from years ago. In doing so, I found this page, which has touched me terribly -- both saddened to hear of her departure but warmed to see she lived such a full life. So here's my tribute to her: thank you Pat for helping me find joy in playing in the midst of my turbulent teen years. It's a gift I will carry forever. I hold you in my heart and am thinking of you and the loved ones you have left behind. With love, Carolina M.

Just thinking about Pat today. Imaging her wry smile in response :)

Today, it has been one month, and I am feeling the loss of my dear Patty even more on this day. I tried to share a video of the two of us having a grand time, but unfortunately, it turned out to be too large.
