Everyone thought I was a joke. And look where we are now.

Oliver Tree Nickell was born on June 29, 1993, in Santa Cruz, California, to Jesse Louis Nickell III and Christine Marie Nickell — two traveling circus performers whose wandering, art-soaked life gave their son a childhood unlike any other. The family lived in a mobile home for years before settling in Santa Cruz when Oliver was twelve, and by then he had already been taking classical piano lessons since age three, writing original compositions by four, and claiming a full album by six. The road, the circus, and the music were in his blood from the very beginning. Middle school brought guitars, a ska band called Irony, and a deepening pull toward hip-hop and electronic music. His teenage years were harder — at thirteen, the death of his cousin from spinal meningitis shook him profoundly, and a battle with severe drug addiction strained his family relationships. He found his way back through local music collectives, a reconciliation that shaped the raw emotional honesty that would define his work. He also became a competitive kick-scooter rider with corporate sponsorships, retiring at eighteen after serious injuries — the same stubborn drive simply shifted into performance art and stage spectacle. Oliver launched his recording career in 2010 under early pseudonyms before releasing his debut EP "Demons" on R&S Records in 2013, drawing attention with a Thom Yorke-approved cover of Radiohead's "Karma Police." He studied business at San Francisco State University, then transferred to the California Institute of the Arts, graduating in 2017 with a degree in music technology. That same year, his viral 2016 collaboration with Whethan, "When I'm Down," landed him a deal with Atlantic Records and introduced the world to his unforgettable persona — bowl-cut hair, oversized '80s silhouettes, and a gift for absurdist comedy that masked genuine artistic depth. His debut album "Ugly Is Beautiful" debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 in 2020. "Life Goes On" went platinum in 2021. "Miss You" with Robin Schulz earned a 2x platinum certification and a Brit Award nomination in 2022. Through it all, Oliver remained fiercely independent — leaving Atlantic Records in 2026 to release his fourth album, "Love You Madly Hate You Badly," through his own Alien Boy Records and launch "The World's First World Tour" across all seven continents. He died on June 14, 2026, when two helicopters collided mid-air over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at age thirty-two. His will directed all posthumous earnings away from inheritance and toward emerging artists through Dr. Oliver Tree's Art Grants for Baby Geniuses — because he always believed the music should outlive the money, and that art belonged to the next generation of creators.

Oliver Tree, I started watching your music after your passing. And I keep listening to Life goes on over and over. When I look in the comment sections of videos you made, almost all of them are about your passing. Like you said, life goes on. And mine will. Even though yours isn’t going on anymore, it will be by your music. You have amazing music and I wish you could keep going. Rest in peace Oliver. And like you said, life goes on.
