Oicenth Cynthia Phang, Nee Mullings
April 12th, 1940 - July 10th, 2020
April 12th, 1940 - July 10th, 2020
Oicenth “Nurse” Phang was a caring, compassionate, loving and kind person who had a tremendous zest for life. Daughter of the late Leslie and Iris Mullings, Oicenth was born on the 12th of April, 1940 in Dalton, St. Elizabeth. She was the seventh of twelve children, consisting of three boys and nine girls.
A firm but fair disciplinarian, she possessed a wonderful sense of humor, often accompanied by an infectious smile and spirited laughter that was contagious to all who encountered her. Most of all, she was an amazing mother to five sons and three daughters, loving wife, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. And oh! An exceptional nurse in her own right.
“Nurse” managed the clinic in Islington where she was an early advocate for family planning, prenatal care and the overall wellbeing of families in her community. She worked tirelessly and with conviction to ensure the safety of every mother and child she delivered, thus earning the respect and admiration of the people of her district.
Not only was she an amazing nurse, she was also a dedicated member of the Islington Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Water Valley Primary School Board, a Justice of the Peace and a pillar of the Islington/Nutfield community.
Oicenth was a beloved wife and mother who was cherished by the community. Her legacy lives on in the lives of her children and everyone she touched. Her warmth, grace and beautiful spirit will be missed dearly.

Sincere condolences over the passing of your dear Mom, Aunt Io. Just wanted to say how very sorry I am to hear this sad news. Your Mom meant a lot to me. When we first met, she shared some wonderful memories of my own Mom, Norrett. Also told me that Yasmin thought she was our Mom when she visited JA after our Mom's passing. Shared some other deep things also. She was a beautiful person inside and out. Will be sorely missed. We corresponded for a few years and I have kept her letters. Her wish was for us to keep in touch. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. Be gentle with yourselves, grieving is a process. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Aunt Io, I have been so blessed to have had you as my substitute mother . You had taken me under your care from infancy to adulthood with open arms and had treated me as one of your own with tender love and care, for that I'm forever grateful to you. You had thought me so many things like how to make bammy, cassava and sweet potato puddin, which I'm still making to this day, all thanks to you. Not only did you thought me how to cook, you were my mentor and my inspirational guide, always wanting the best for me. You had done so much for me and I thank you with all my heart. Our Heavenly Father has called you home to be among his angels because your mission was completed and well done hear on earth but I want you to know that you are truly missed. I'll miss your smile, your warm embrace and your words of encouragement. Until we meet again rest in peace Mom, I'll always love you and your legacy will forever lives on in my heart.

She loved and cared for me and papa (Mr. Wright). She was not just a neighbour, she was family to us.

Mom, you instilled the values that I adhere to in my own life as a parent, and set the bar for which to aspire. I hope to build on what you taught me and always strive to grow and be a better person. You will forever be in my heart.
