Each day is a gift to be lived out to purpose. Every day that God opens my eyes, I know there is something that he wants me to accomplish.

Orenthial James "O. J." Brigance — known to nearly everyone as "O.J. Juice" — was a man whose greatest victories had nothing to do with trophies or championship rings, and everything to do with how he lived. Born on September 29, 1969, in Houston, Texas, Brigance grew up with an athlete's drive and a servant's heart, two qualities that would define every chapter of his life. At Rice University in Houston, Brigance became one of the most formidable linebackers in program history, setting a career record of 367 tackles and earning All-Southwest Conference honors in 1990. His professional career began in the Canadian Football League with the BC Lions, where a sensational 1993 season — 20 sacks and a CFL West All-Star selection — announced him to the football world. With the Baltimore Stallions, he helped deliver the 1995 Grey Cup championship to Baltimore, then crossed over to the NFL with the Miami Dolphins, where he twice served as team captain and earned both the Ed Block Courage Award and the NFL Player Association's Unsung Hero Award. Nothing, however, defined his playing career like January 28, 2001. Lining up for the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV, Brigance made the game's first tackle as the Ravens dismantled the New York Giants 34–7. He remains the only player in professional football history to win championships for the same city in both the CFL and the NFL — a feat as singular as the man himself. In 2004, Brigance returned to Baltimore not as a player but as director of player development, becoming the kind of mentor every young player hoped to find in the organization. Then, in May 2007, at 37 years old, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The prognosis was two to five years. Brigance would live nineteen more — working four to five days a week, navigating Ravens facilities in his motorized wheelchair, communicating through an eye-gaze device, and never once displaying anger or frustration. With his wife, Chanda, he founded the Brigance Brigade Foundation, channeling his fight with ALS into research funding and support for families living with the disease. He received the 2016 NCAA Inspiration Award and the George Halas Award, among many others, but his most enduring legacy was simpler: every day, he reached out to Ravens players in difficult moments, bringing his infectious smile into rooms that needed it most. O. J. Brigance died on August 17, 2026, at age 56, after a 19-year battle with ALS. He is survived by his beloved wife, Chanda. A man of deep Christian faith, he practiced what he preached: each day was a gift, and he spent every one of them on purpose.

OJ Brigance walk with the Lord and as a friend was immeasurable along with Chanda when we first met at Evangel Cathedral. OJ and Chanda are visibly Christians that became friends in Christ and my family. He was a mentor and Man of God who always spoke into my life. He was Man I met who never change and loved his wife Chanda as Christ loved him. It was a pleasure meeting him and know he is with the Lord. As I saw him and Chanda in my capacity as a Security/Armor Bearer for Apostle Don Meares and First Lady Marion Meares they always walk and talk of the joy of the Lord at all times I will remember the most about my Brother in Christ and now as Chanda lives to continues to carry the torch of Faith with a full treasure chest of memories OJ has lovely demonstrated as a husband and Man of GOD throughout his life I hope GOD will continue to grant Chanda, family, friends, and fans access to his earthly walk with GOD. Chanda and OJ Family have my deepest and heartfelt condolences as OJ has now earn his eternal earned transition from mortality to everlasting immortality with the Almighty wearing his awarded crown I hope I hope I can closely emulate OJ's life to receive my glorified body to see OJ again. I truly pray his memories and celebration of life is filled with his contributions and purpose GOD allowed us to receive, and Chanda is celebrated as well for her Heroic, Faithful, Loving Wife and Caree Giver during this time of sorrow and joy knowing they both are GOD'S apples in His eyes wrapped in His arms of Grace! Be blessed always!!

No one embodied what it means to be a Raven quite like O.J. Brigance. Not just the unforgettable first tackle in Super Bowl XXXV, but for every day since, when he showed all of us how to fight with faith and grace. O.J. brought his heart and soul into every room he entered. His smile and spirit never wavered, and his courage is now woven permanently into the fabric of this organization.

I am devastated and at a loss for words. O.J. was one of the most genuine, sincere people I have ever known. From the moment he arrived in Baltimore, you could feel his energy. His amazing smile, welcoming nature and infectious personality made everyone around him feel like family. He was a hero to this city long before his courageous battle with ALS and became an even greater inspiration in the way he faced it with the same fight, faith and grace he brought to the football field.

O.J. Brigance was a great man. O.J. was a great friend to me, my wife and my daughter, and I will always treasure the time we shared with him. We loved him, and we respected him. He was a hero in our eyes. O.J. was a man of great faith who was given a very challenging purpose, and he met it perfectly in every way through the great glory of God.

We have lost a very special soul in O.J. Brigance. O.J. has been a member of the Ravens family for over 25 years and was an inspiring symbol of grace, class, compassion and competitive competence.
