Nitzi. With great sadness I am saying goodbye to my brother in spirit, my super talented filmmaker best friend Nitzan Gilady. A most unique human, an extraordinary artist, a friend like no other. Though his films are deep and serious he was one of the most hilarious people I knew. He paved his path as a filmmaker with courage, fire and conviction. In his films his deep human compassion came through, with an extraordinary visual ability to tell stories. He observed everything all the time with the many cameras he had and endless story ideas. His films were his children. He was strong willed, fiercely protective, extraordinarily honest as a friend as well. We were close friends since I was 18, we lived together in NY — I came after him to the theater school he found. I knew all his secrets and he knew all of mine. He told me I am strong and to be strong. He told me “calm down!” At some point I called him Coach. He once bought me an orange leather jacket “so you can look a little cool”. He had a great eye and made me swear that “if you see clothes that remind you of Polish grandmothers, don’t buy it”. When he met Charles he said “he is the most amazing guy, don’t you dare driving him crazy”. He loved life and said “celebrate! Now! Let’s go!” He was one hundred percent fearless, even though he talked a lot about fears. He was sick at the end, my only comfort is that he is not suffering anymore. He didn’t like resting, “rest only in the grave!”. He is now resting in peace. I will carry him now with me to wherever I go, as he always liked to be, free and everywhere all the time. I will love him forever.
