I can’t believe my brother is dead. At times, I’m happy for him. At times, I hate him for being weak. At times, I hate myself and all of you including myself for abandoning him. At times, I envy him for being at peace where we are not. I’m trying to remember when was the last time I saw him and I can’t. Maybe, it was the time him and I went to Whitby beach and had a cigarette together. I don’t know. I refuse to remember him. I choose to remember him as a handsome boy who had a contagious laugh and loved unconditionally. He didn’t know how much I loved him. I didn’t show it and I didn’t often times express it. He was so loved. He was so special. Only if he knew.

Shaun was like my nephew. He treated me as his aunt with affection and respect. During one of his endeavors to become healthy and successful, he shared his future plans with me with enthusiasm and hope in his authentic Farsi language. He talked about a steady job, a healthy life style and making himself even more available to family and friends. That day I dropped him to his place and saw how hopeful and firm he was walking to his house. I will miss his kind words and courteous demeanor.

Koushauns voice is in my head as I write this. That laugh is imprinted in my mind and heart forever. What a beautiful soul. My friend & my family. I'll miss you. Memories of Kabul, Sears and even you forcing me to watch you play basketball - will be with me forever. ❤️ Until we meet again Shaun Joon

I remember meeting Koushaun for the first time as a child. He was the first “older kid” who’d ever treated me as an equal. I’d always that feeling of being welcome for decades to come. It speaks to his kind spirit.
