There will never be another like Nichola Jane Davis.

Intelligent. Organised. Caring. Successful. Generous. Beautiful.  But she was so much more...

Nichola was greater than words, Nichola was actions. A dedicated mother whose love knew no bounds, a daughter and sister who adventured across the world, a compassionate doctor who cared for those most vulnerable, a loving friend that was there in times of need, and a true inspiration to all those who knew her. Nichola’s capabilities were endless. Everyone who crossed paths with her recognised her unique and unparalleled character. The world is a little smaller and undoubtedly less wise without Nichola; she will be missed dearly and remembered as the woman beyond measure.

Nichola made an impact in the best way possible. She influenced many, with her presence prompting others to reflect on personal actions and better themselves in the way she tried to, each and every day. Nichola first made her impact in the United Kingdom where she grew up and studied medicine at Cambridge. Initially practicing in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, she ultimately specialised as a general practitioner due to her love for a variety of challenges, broad possibilities and the desire to have an enduring impact throughout the lives of her patients. Nichola immigrated to Australia soon after where she continued to give the very best care, and worked tirelessly across the country from Adelaide to Darwin.

Nichola was a mother first and foremost. She devoted her life to supporting, caring for and teaching both of her children. Nichola did this as a single mother without forgetting those who also depended on her, concurrently working as a devoted rural GP and accomplished medico-legal adviser. She taught her children the value of an unwavering moral compass and work ethic with strong role-modeling and love that could not be matched. Nichola exemplified the meaning of selflessness as she relentlessly prioritised the happiness and success of her children before all else.

Those fortunate to call Nichola a friend enjoyed her quick witted humour that never faded and her way of helping others when things weren’t okay. It was of utmost importance to Nichola that all those around her had fun and succeeded in their own ambitions. Nichola invested in her friendships and would often use her skill sets to aid others however possible, day or night. Friends needing help with work, patients struggling with domestic disputes or neighbours worried for their unwell children could always count on Nichola. Friends sought her counsel as a trusted confidante and she was there unfailingly, often providing support before they knew it was needed.

Above all, Nichola will be remembered not for her wisdom to know what was right but for her bravery to do what she believed was right. Future grandchildren will learn of their brave Nana Nichola and aspire to live a life as courageous and giving as her own.

Nichola's legacy will live forever in the character of her beloved children and their families, the hearts of friends and relatives, and the minds of the patients who she cared for over so many years.

I had the privilege of being a patient of Nichola's at the University of Melbourne health clinic. There is none like her. She accompanied me through my first pregnancy as my 'shared care' practitioner and after my daughter's birth she became our family doctor. She answered dozens of questions at our appointments, reassured me, gave me confidence, and was a strong advocate for me. She was always respectful and compassionate. She never rushed her patients. I had never experienced such care and compassion by a medical professional before. She also had such a great sense of humour. I also remember her telling me about what birth would be like from her experiences working in obstetrics - things that I had never been told before and information I did not receive at the hospital or the many birth preparation courses we went to. But this knowledge was empowering, as she intended it to be, and it made the whole experience much easier. I also remember her advocating for me strongly when the hospital had done something which she felt was unethical. She had strong convictions and truly cared about her patients. It was so reassuring to have a doctor that cares beyond the brief consultation and someone that followed up. Occasionally she would tell me about her sons with such pride.

This weekend marked two years since we lost our mum. We are very proud to share that The Dr Nichola Davis Scholarship has officially been established as legacy of our mum’s commitment to medicine in Queensland. Using an initial donation from her long term employer Medical Indemnity Protection Society (MIPS), in conjunction with the The University of Queensland (UQ) endowment fund, the scholarship will continue in perpetuity and provide assistance to students studying medicine who are financially disadvantaged from rural and remote areas of Australia. For any family or friends who may be interested in contributing a lasting gift in our mother’s name, donations are tax deductible and can now be made. Any and all proceeds are directed towards the scholarship fund. We are incredibly grateful to MIPS and UQ for such a wonderful opportunity. You can find the link below and thank you in advance. https://donations.uq.edu.au/dr-nichola-davis-scholarship

I coached Nichola during her first year at Queens'. It was clear then she was special. Sadly missed.

When I was a med student, I projected being "anything but a GP!" until my weekly clinical placements 20 years ago with Nicola in Cairns. She was so intelligent and kind, and a great teacher. She showed me what being a great GP looked like and introduced me to the intriguing clinical and social aspects of grassroots medicine. It inspired me to pursue GP as a career myself and I'm so glad she opened my eyes to it. I'm sad to hear belatedly of her passing but couldn't think of a better role model for a scholarship.

I was so sorry to read about Nichola’s passing in the College newsletter. It seems a lifetime ago that we started medicine in Cambridge. We went on to share a flat while she studied at St Thomas’ and me at Guy’s. It was funny when she came along to watch me play in the hospitals cup rugby for Guy’s against St Thomas’s. It is so sad that she has been taken from us so early. My best wishes to her family.
