A Life Together: Memories of Nancy

First Encounters

In the summer of 1990, I met Nancy while playing in a band at Jerry Farber’s comedy club on Pharr Road in Atlanta. During a break, I stepped outside and noticed a woman wearing a “carpe diem” T-shirt walking from the parking lot toward the club. She joined us at the front and started talking with the group. We struck up a conversation about Star Trek, growing tomatoes, and other topics typical of people getting to know each other. When our break ended, I excused myself and returned inside to play our set with Jerry. Nancy later discovered I was in the band, and from that moment, our fate was sealed. We would go on to spend the next 35 years together.

Shared Passions and Growing Closer

It did not take long for me to learn that Nancy was a devoted cat lover, caring for three cats of her own. While I liked cats, I had never been a pet owner. Over the years, cats became an important part of our lives. Neither of us was actively seeking a relationship, but our mutual attraction and shared interests brought us together.

In the following months, our bond deepened as we enjoyed typical dating activities, such as attending events, watching fireworks, and visiting Six Flags. By the fall, Nancy moved into my house, and we began living together. The following spring, we got engaged and made plans to marry in June—exactly one year and one day after we first met.

Building a Life Together

The first year was challenging, as we were both starting anew and had very little. Fortunately, my house provided a place to live. When the new year arrived and times were tough, Nancy encouraged me to take charge and find a new job. Her support and motivation led me to pursue a career in the computer software industry.

Nancy continued freelancing as a technical illustrator, which provided stability until my new job began. With things progressing quickly, we decided to get married. In June 1991, exactly one year after we met, we married at a Chinese restaurant in Atlanta.

Years of Happiness

We shared a happy life, making new friends through our mutual love of aerobics and travel. Nancy took over managing the household while I focused on advancing in my career. Life settled into a comfortable rhythm, and we enjoyed our time together.

Facing Challenges

Our happiness continued with family and friends until around 2001, when Nancy began to feel weak and fatigued. She was diagnosed with lymphoma and underwent treatment. After recovering, she enjoyed a period of good health, but in 2014, she developed lung cancer and had one of her lung nodes removed. She continued with treatments as needed and was able to maintain a relatively normal life.

Later Years

From then on, Nancy and I led a quiet life. We enjoyed movies, senior university, water aerobics, and spending time with friends. About a year ago, Nancy’s health declined due to a paralyzed vocal cord, which led to lung problems and eventually an infection that turned into pneumonia.

Farewell

Nancy will be deeply missed by me and the cats. It is comforting to know that she is now free from distress and has passed on peacefully.

One of the most endearing things about Nancy was you never knew what was coming out of her mouth. It could be profoundly hilarious, or just as profoundly "out there". She never met a stranger and could make anyone feel right at home. We shared many "beach trips" over the years and we could count on Nancy to keep us entertained. She was also a dear friend who cared about all those how knew her. Rest my dear friend, this journey has come completed itself. You deserve the peace. Much love.

When I think of Nancy… I think of her smile, her bright disposition her kind and caring soul and her laugh! Nancy’s infectious positivity was an asset that she shared with many. Her strength radiated. Most importantly, her genuine love & adoration for Howie, her exceptional kitty family, her friends, her Art. and for life. She is missed dearly.❤️

In the 40 years that I loved and laughed with Nancy, I will always remember one of the girls' beach trips. It was one of our many and not a fancy place, but we were on the beach and eating and drinking like royalty. She and Howard had just started dating so there was a lot of communication between the two during that trip. I had a "need" to go watch the star showers scheduled for that night, but no one was really up for going out at 2am to watch meteorites fall from the sky. Nancy committed and we both got up to go watch. Put a blanket down on the beach and layed down. After a little while some of the other girls joined us and I remember how we always would have that moment. It's such a favorite memory and thanks to Nancy who was always up for anything we had a unique and memorable experience. I will miss my friend every day. We had a mutual love for cats and shared a lot of time talking about our fur babies. I was able to visit the "rags" and others over the years and always looked forward to our talks about our rescues, foster failures, and efforts to save every darn cat we ran across. Nancy made me a beautiful painting of one of my boys, Fireball, and gifted me with the painting the last time I saw her. The one thing that gives me some comfort in losing Nany P is knowing that my 20 year old kitty Ipo is with her on the bridge after his passing on December 4th. I'm sure he met her along with all her other kids and it gives me some comfort to know they will take care of each other. Thanks my friend for looking after Ipo until I can get there. He seemed a little scared so I know you will give him lots of love. You will never be forgotten and always loved.
