Loved Ones

On the sunny, summer day of August 2nd 1943 Nancy Louise (Johnson) Murdoch, daughter of Raymond and Jeanne Johnson entered the world of Sandusky, Michigan. At the age 77, Nancy passed away on October 18, 2020 in the presence of her family. During her life, she was the beloved wife of Douglas Murdoch and treasured mother of Scott and Andrew (Drew) Murdoch. Her nurturing spirit and kindness extended to her daughter in law, Victoria Murdoch and granddaughter, Madison Murdoch. Growing up with a host of cherished siblings; Janet Herzog, Larry Johnson, Jane Logston, Linda Scott, Deana Corp and predeceased siblings Joyce Johnson and Ronald Johnson. Nancy learned and lived the value of family, cherishing it every day of her life. As a graduate of the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor with a Masters Degree in Education, Nancy worked for the Dearborn Public School system (and others), fostering joyful (and disciplined) learning. Sharing stories of her childhood on her family’s farm, Nancy would tell her granddaughter, “I would finish my chores, and then I would sneak away to sit under a tree and read.” She continued to be a voracious reader until the day she died, exuding a contagious enthusiasm for shared experiences and living, if only for a moment, the lives of others. As a devoted community member, Nancy served as a Lay Minister to her church, a Teacher Union Organizer, a former Director for the Zeal Credit Union, and in various University of Michigan-Dearborn Alumni roles. Now, with the late Fall bloom of marigolds (“the herb of the sun”) in the garden she spent so many years of her life cultivating, we are reminded of her creativity and passion, her patience and understanding, and the brightness she brought to every one of her endeavors. In lieu of flowers, please donate in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Foundation (alz.org). Memorial Services will be planned for close friends and family at a future date.

As I stated before, I am Nancys German exchange student son, who spent several months in the Murdoch home in 1984 as a senior in high school. I am very grateful for that time together and for all Nancy did for me and others. The year in Michigan has really positively changed my life. I tried to capture my thoughts and feelings in the following lines. Nancy You opened your home and your heart to my teenager me with a smile from the start. You asked about my country, family and ways to be to also share your ideas, compassion and order for me to see. You liked to laugh about jokes even mine when you organized our life we knew all things would be fine. For all little moments, your love and your care we thank you For all of your work, your guidance and energy there to spare we thank you. You will be with us in our sadness today We hold your memories for us and for you as your soul is well on its way to a higher place with no worries or pain to the place where love has achieved its eternal heavenly reign. Love, Torsten

Such beautiful words Scott! As soon as I heard the news, my stomach just dropped! You know how much she meant to me! She gave me my first job as a paralegal! She was my mentor! She knew how many kids I had, their birthdays, holidays and "just because" days! She helped me through so many things! I am so so sad for you and the rest of the family! Please know I'm praying for you and yours!!!! One of those people you could never forget!!! God bless!!! Praying for peace and comfort for all!!! ❤

I met Nancy when I worked with Doug and we went to weddings, parties and events. We later kept in touch through Christmas cards, too. You are so right to say that she brought brightness with her! I've loved looking at the pictures you've shared. The wedding photos reminded me that I was at the 50th Anniversary party when it was so very cold that year. And Nancy said, "what were we thinking of to get married in January?" It was a lovely party. And I was working with Doug and heard all about those wonderful trips to Egypt and Scotland. What a wonderful life you shared. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Nancy was my older sister. I looked up to her all my life. As a child some summers she would pick me up at the farm in Sanilac county, and take me to her house in Dearborn for 2 weeks. These were times to remember. I admired Nancy's desire for higher education. She gave me the example that I too could work hard and earn my 2 Master Degrees. In my personal life and professional career as a UMC Ordained Minister, Nancy set the foundation for my moral and spiritual life. I have been grieving since the time that Doug informed me of Nancy's diagnosis of dementia. I have been trained as a pastor on such matters, and understood the hardships for Nancy as well as her family. I always knew Nancy was there as a g stable reminder to do my best in everything. God be with you, Nancy, as you are reunited with your loved ones in heaven. May God surround her family with love and strength and goodness during this time. Love ya, Sis. Your baby sister Jane
