She served as my conscience. — Henry Kissinger

Nancy Sharon Kissinger, born Nancy Sharon Maginnes on April 13, 1934, in Manhattan, New York, was a woman of formidable intellect, quiet elegance, and deep civic purpose. Raised in White Plains, New York, she was the daughter of Albert Bristol Maginnes — a wealthy trusts and estates lawyer who had also played professional football — and Agnes McKinley. From the very beginning, Nancy moved through the world with the confidence of someone who had been given every advantage and the wisdom to do something meaningful with it. After graduating from The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry in 1951, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Mount Holyoke College in 1955. She returned to her alma mater briefly as a teacher of history and physical education before embarking on graduate studies in history at the University of California, Berkeley. Her intellectual restlessness later drew her to the Sorbonne in Paris, where she deepened her grasp of international affairs during the late 1960s. In 1964, a Harvard professor named Henry Kissinger recommended Nancy to Governor Nelson Rockefeller as a foreign policy researcher. It was the beginning of a professional partnership that would become one of history's great love stories. She worked with Rockefeller through the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and, from 1972 to 1975, directed international studies for his Commission on Critical Choices for Americans — a role that matched her sharp analytical mind and passion for global affairs. On March 30, 1974, Nancy and Henry married in a four-minute ceremony in Arlington, Virginia, that surprised nearly everyone. She was 39; he was serving as Secretary of State. She stepped gracefully into the arena of American diplomacy, accompanying Henry on major missions across the globe, offering counsel that he openly acknowledged. "My wife Nancy encouraged me with her advice and love," he later wrote. "As always, she served as my conscience." Nearly six feet tall, with patrician bearing and a ready sense of humor, Nancy provided an elegant and steadying presence beside her husband. She was fiercely protective of his legacy and, by all accounts, inseparable from him until his death in November 2023. Their homes in Manhattan and at their 300-acre estate in South Kent, Connecticut, were centers of conversation, connection, and purpose. In her philanthropic life, Nancy championed humanitarian aid, cultural preservation, environmental conservation, education, and animal welfare. She served as a longtime trustee of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, as Trustee Emerita of Mount Holyoke College — receiving its David Rockefeller Award for Extraordinary Service — and was honored with the Andrew Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2015. She was also a devoted friend to her golden retriever Tyler and Labrador retrievers Amelia and Abigail. Nancy Sharon Kissinger died on August 20, 2026, at her home in South Kent, Connecticut. She was 92. She leaves behind a legacy of service, scholarship, and love that will endure far beyond her years.

She's a little liberal, but otherwise she's all right.
