I was fond of acting from childhood. I was in class six when I began to perform and sing in school plays.

Mushtaq Khan was one of Hindi cinema's most beloved character actors — a man whose shuffling walk, twinkling eyes, and perfectly timed one-liners could light up any scene, however small his part. Born in 1950 in Baihar, a quiet town in Balaghat district, Madhya Pradesh, he discovered the joy of performance early: by class six, he was already acting and singing in school plays, a passion that would carry him across India and into the hearts of millions. After completing his Master of Arts from Balaghat, Khan made his way to Mumbai with little more than ambition and a deep love for the stage. In the city, he found his tribe at the Bharatiya Jan Natya Manch (IPTA), where his friend Suresh Zargar introduced him to the theatre movement. There he performed in acclaimed productions such as Shankar Shesh's "Dronacharya" and crossed paths with luminaries like Farooque Shaikh. Those years forged the naturalism and precision that would define his screen work. His film debut came in 1980 with the landmark "Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai." His breakthrough, however, arrived through sheer persistence. Acting on a word from legendary screenwriter Salim Khan, he pursued a meeting with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt — paying a neighbourhood grocer a single rupee per message just to be reachable by phone, checking every evening for two weeks until the call finally came. That stubborn faith paid off with a role in "Kabzaa" (1988), the first of a rich collaboration that produced "Aashiqui," "Sadak," "Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin," and "Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke." Over five decades and more than 500 films, Khan became one of the most recognisable faces in Indian cinema. He could make an audience laugh without uttering a word, and shift into a moment of quiet gravity just as effortlessly. His most iconic creation was Ballu — Nana Patekar's hapless sidekick in the 2007 comedy "Welcome" — whose deadpan declaration about a fake leg and a hockey career became one of Bollywood's most quoted lines. He was equally at home in "Hera Pheri," "Gadar: Ek Prem Katha," and "Stree 2," and on television in serials from "Wagle Ki Duniya" to "Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi." Mushtaq Khan passed away on September 24, 2026, at Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai, following a prolonged battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Salma, sons Mohammed Arshad and Mohsin, and daughter Saba. He leaves behind five decades of laughter, warmth, and an extraordinary gallery of characters that will endure as long as people love Hindi cinema.
