Forever in Our Hearts

Minnie Louise Scott was born on January 23, 1945 in Jonesville, South Carolina, to the late Joseph Rodgers and Alberta Gallman Rodgers.  At an early age, she was a member of Woodson Chapel Baptist Church in Union, South Carolina and an excellent student who graduated from Sims High School in Union, South Carolina.   At 17 years old, with a strong, independent spirit and a desire to live in the Northeast, Minnie packed her belongings and relocated to the state of New York.

Shortly after her relocation, she met the love of her life, Sid Scott of Alabama.  The two were inseparable and were later married on her birthday in 1965.  To this union, three children were born: Deryx Eugene, Melita Antoinette, and Sidney Alexander.   She was a loving and devoted wife and mother.  Raising her children was the pride and joy of her life.  For the years that followed the birth of her children, Minnie settled into the ever-important role of a homemaker, caring for her husband, her children and her home.  She was immensely proud of the academic achievements and life success of each of her three children, and never missed an opportunity to share that with family and friends.

Minnie truly loved her family; she especially maintained a close relationship and bond with her sister, Betty Jean and her brother, Rev. Malachi, whom she adored.   She also loved music, singing, dancing, spending time in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, and keeping abreast of current events, including world news and politics.  Minnie was a loving generous person, who was always willing to share whatever she could with family and friends.  She was quite small in stature –5’0 tall on a good day—but incredibly strong-willed and independent.  Although she was not outwardly expressive about her faith, she would occasionally remark about her love for Jesus and how good God is and has been to her.

In 1968, Minnie and Sid made Freeport, New York their home, where they raised their family and were regarded affectionately by their neighbors, including the Andre’s, who became dear friends.  Minnie continued to reside in the family home (even after her husband’s passing in June 2000) until approximately two months before her death when she went to live with her son, Deryx and his family.

Minnie transitioned suddenly and peacefully on March 27, 2023.   She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Sid, her parents, Joseph and Alberta, her sister, Thelma, and brothers, Ralph, Alonzo, and Joe Lewis.   Left to cherish her memories are her three devoted children, Deryx (Rose), Sidney (Dawn), and Melita (Chester); eight loving grandchildren, Brian, Chris, Quewan, Brandon, Bradley, Jordan, Jade, Liah, and Braxton; a loving brother, Rev. Malachi, a caring sister, Betty Jean, a wonderful sister-in-law, Bessie Ann;  a special cousin, Eliza Spearman and her children, Valerie, Shirley, and Karen; two nieces, Belinda and Lisa; two nephews, Malachi, Jr. and Eleazar, Jr.; dear friends, Rae Chisolm and family,  Renate and Renold Andre and family, Sharon Harrison, and Mae and Louis Newton; and a host of other relatives and friends.
