Milton Kaplan

July 14th, 1925 - July 28th, 2021

July 14th, 1925 - July 28th, 2021

Cherished Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Friend passed away peacefully on July 28, 2021 in Rancho Mirage, California. Milton was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 14, 1925 to Alex and Bessie Kaplan. Throughout his 96 years, he had many adventures. Milton was a proud veteran of World War II, who received the Bronze Battle Star for valor in the Battle of Hürtgen Forest-the longest single battle the U.S. Army has ever fought. He was a Wisconsin Badger, lawyer, textile representative, pilot, automobile enthusiast, computer fanatic, wise owl, pen pal, and frequent texter to many. Renowned for his sweet tooth, Milton made frequent stops for ice cream with his kids and their friends. "Milty", who exuded warmth and caring, left his thumbprint on many people! He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Merri Kaplan; his children Douglas (Karen) Kaplan, Dru Kaplan, and Alex (Olivier Basdevant) Kaplan; his chosen family Juana Estrella and Alexandra Rosas, who called him "Mitchie"; his grandchildren Sarah (Stephen) Pils, Maggie Kaplan-Paliwoda, Annika Kaplan Basdevant; and his great-grandchildren Indie and Leigh Pils. Milton will also be missed by an adoring extended family and many friends, whom he loved. The family is arranging for a private memorial, and Milton will be honored and inurned at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA at a later date. Please send any donations to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens.

Dear Milt - my dear pen pal. I loved getting messages from you! I recently went back in time to re-read some of them. Whenever I would travel (and there was a restless period for a while), you really made an effort to be present for me. We have some hilarious exchanges (like when you not-so-subtly reminded me that both photo and video could be shared via gmail and maybe I could share a bit more of what I was seeing and experiencing!). Once I was married, you always hugged and kissed John at the end of your message, too. Every time. My friendship with Alex is one of the greatest gifts of my life. So I am forever indebted to you for that. But the extra special part was the friendship and cheerleading from you too and from Merri. Many people will miss you. You touched many, many hearts. Know you touched ours too. Rest peacefully, sweet Milty! xo xo

Yesterday, Merri and his children depicted Milton in the most truthful and wonderful way; Can I add that he was the sunshine himself, bringing light and warmth in every room he entered: he was the Joy and Happiness and loved beauty.. He was something more: a perfect gentleman, in French un parfait gentilhomme.. one of the last, this sort of people having nearly disappeared from our actual world. And as a perfect gentleman he was a perfect friend. I miss him terribly, miss his laugh, his posts, miss the fact that He and Merri, showed that somewhere, sometimes, the perfect love exists, and that was so comforting to us who have only dreamed of it. Dear Milton you will never dye, you live in hour hearts
