I didn't know I had 3 brothers in the U.S. so finding them was a surreal experience. Andrew, my husband and I really enjoyed getting to know Mike through the experiences all of us enjoyed. Mike didn't walk away from a challenge and hiking the Grand Canyon was no different. Shortly after meeting, we "bagged" rare accommodation at Phantom Ranch, at the base of the canyon, making this trek possible. Mike trained in Gig Harbour and us in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We definitely had the advantage of high altitudes and cold weather. In December, 13 months later, we all arrived at the canyon. Canyon weather is unpredictable at that time of year so we had to be prepared. I'm sure Mike's pack weighted 20-25 pounds. The hike was beautiful and interesting as we met so many people along the way. He weaved stories about his amazing kids and grandkids into each visit. That evening at Phantom Ranch all the hikers ate together sitting on wooden benches at long camp style tables. We devoured 2" thick steaks and baked potatoes followed by 3" square pieces of thick chocolate cake and icing. The group was intrigue with the story Mike told about how he was united with his Canadian sister and her family. The next morning, before day break, we readied for the long trek out of the canyon which proved to be more difficult. That evening, burgers and beer never tasted so good while we regaled the stories from our adventure together. Mike was always interested in learning and experiencing new things and proved to be a loyal brother. As Joni Mitchel sang, …"We don't know what we've got until it is gone." My Dad would always be there to comfort me with a sandwhich and wise words when I was dealing with anything difficult. He always had my back even if I was wrong.

Mike always had words of wisdom to share, in a way which didn't put himself above others, and were always worth listening too. He was a great storyteller and always positive and passionate about life. Also, I will never forget his amazing Donald Duck impression. One that would keep his -then young grandchild- giggling with joy. You will be mourned Mike Turner but your legacy will live on.
