A quiet man who shaped so much — in print, at the club, and at home.

Michael Wynn Jones was a Welsh writer, editor, publisher, and devoted football club steward whose quiet determination shaped everything he touched — from the pages of prestigious British magazines to the terraces of Carrow Road. Born in September 1941 to a Church of England vicar and a schoolteacher, he was raised with a love of ideas and the written word. He was educated at Lancing College and the University of Oxford, and those foundations launched a distinguished career at the heart of British journalism. He joined the Daily Mirror Magazine as deputy editor in the late 1960s, and it was there, in 1969, that he met a young cookery writer named Delia Smith. Their professional partnership quickly became something far deeper, and on 11 September 1971 they married in Stowmarket, Suffolk — a partnership that would endure for over 55 years. In 1972, Michael was appointed deputy editor of The Spectator, and through the following decades he contributed to Twentieth Century and Nova magazines while pursuing a parallel life as an author. His books — among them George Cruikshank: His Life and London (1978) and The Cartoon History of Britain (1979) — reflected a mind that delighted in social history, art, and the comic possibilities of the past. In the early 1990s, Michael and Delia co-founded New Crane Publishing, producing several of her celebrated cookery titles and launching Sainsbury's Magazine, which Michael edited with quiet authority. The venture was sold in 2005 for approximately £7 million. Yet for those who followed Norwich City Football Club, Michael Wynn Jones was something else entirely: a true fan first and a director second. He had attended his first Norwich match in April 1955 at the age of thirteen, and the club never left him. In 1998, he and Delia became joint majority shareholders, investing around £12 million over twenty-six years, overseeing six league promotions and three Championship titles. He was often found sitting with the fans rather than in the directors' box, scarf on, every bit as invested emotionally as anyone in the ground. He loved word puzzles, enjoyed cooking in the kitchen at their Suffolk home — Delia knowing precisely when to leave him to it — and was happiest in those quieter moments away from the limelight he always preferred to avoid. Michael stepped down as a director in October 2024 and was named an honorary life president of Norwich City. He passed away peacefully on 28 September 2026, aged 85, cared for at home by the St Elizabeth Hospice community nursing team. He leaves behind a legacy of intellectual generosity, steadfast loyalty, and the kind of love that sustains both a marriage and a football club across more than half a century.

He was patient, he didn't rush to judgement. I don't think there was anybody in Delia's life who she listened to more than Michael.
