1939 - March 27th, 2021
Michael George Wright aged 81 died peacefully at his Sherwood Park, Alberta home on Saturday March 27.
Mike was born in Bristol England on April 15, 1939 to parents Thomas and Gladys. He attended the University of Wales, Swansea, graduating with a degree in material sciences (Metallurgy) in 1960. Following graduation he worked for two years with General Electric/Simon Carves Atomic Energy Group, before emigrating to Canada to pursue his Masters degree in Metallurgy in 1963.
While doing his research at McMaster University he met Fiona Crozier, another recent immigrant from the UK working as a nurse in nearby Burlington. They were married in 1964 and moved their base to Hammond Indiana, where Mike worked for the Inland Steel Company. In 1966 they relocated to Pinawa, Manitoba, where Mike was employed by Atomic Energy of Canada at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment (Later Whiteshell Laboratories). Here he developed his passion for sailing, canoeing, and cross country skiing.
In 1991 they moved again to Petawawa, Ontario when Mike was transferred to nearby Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories to assume a general manager role for both facilities. Mike retired from Atomic Energy of Canada in April of 1998 and continued his enjoyment of being around water adding kayaking to his waterborne activities. He also enjoyed photography, travel, and golfing with his friends.
On the occasion of his retirement, well wishing comments focused on his integrity throughout his career. In retirement, Mike became very involved with Calvin United Church and with the United Way in the Ottawa Valley. In 2013 he was awarded the Sovereign’s Medal by the Governor General for his volunteer work.
In 2017 they were on the move again to Sherwood Park, Alberta to be closer to family.
Mike was a kind and caring man and a lifelong tinkerer, fascinated with finding out how things work. He was never one to shy away from a challenge. His calm demeanor, logical approach and leadership will live on through those he interacted with in his life.
Mike is survived by his wife Fiona, sons Craig (Cass) and Graeme (Jennifer), his grandchildren Sophie and Cate, and his sister Pauline.

I have numerous and very fond memories of Mike, both professional, social and spiritual. We both graduated from the same university, with the same degree. I arrived at the Whiteshell lab, in the same branch, a year after Mike. He took me under his wing until I could fly on my own. We played together in sail boats. We sang together in church. They were marvellous times, he was a marvellous guy.

I am saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. He was the best “boss” ever with his kind manner. He always made me feel like we were a team rather than supervisor and assistant. May your memories of Mike help you through this sad time.

We are saddened, Fiona, to learn of Mike’s passing. We have many fond memories of meals shared together, of canoeing and sailing on the Ottawa River. Memories of a long friendship that arose out of Calvin United Church. He had a generosity of spirit that would willingly help in any way he could. He was a fine man in every sense of the word and it was a pleasure to have known him.
