Michael Stevens
June 19th, 1946 - January 25th, 2021
June 19th, 1946 - January 25th, 2021
Michael (Mike/Dude) Stevens was born in Oakland, California on June 19, 1946 to Angie and Chad Stevens. He was the second oldest of his siblings, Diane, Mitch, Peggy and Kelli. He married Sue Stevens in Fresno when he was 21, shortly before serving his country, as drafted, in the Vietnam War. After one year, he was transferred to Pennsylvania where he he served funeral duty, helping families of fallen soldiers say goodbye to their loved ones with dignity and honor. Mike and Sue moved back to Fresno where children, Tony and Katie, were born, spending most of his career working in executive recruiting (and telling tales that he invented the "kiosk" and was recruited for Microsoft in the early days, but turned it down - huge mistake on his part). Although he was proud to run his own business, his passion was giving - his selflessness is unmatched by many, giving anything to anyone who needed it. From rides to soccer practice, to Kiwanis and clothing drives for needy families, a big bear hug when you needed it, and ALWAYS a good laugh and story, he's never turned anyone down who needed him and never known a stranger.
Mike was known for his wicked, and often off-color, sense of humor. He was intelligent, loud and compassionate. He was also a talented singer and guitar player, playing and singing primarily folk music - Peter, Paul and Mary, John Denver, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. And, as many people know, he was a prolific whistler. He whistled often and loudly, so that you always knew he was coming or going.
Mike loved to ride dirt bikes, and camp in places like the Mojave Desert. His dad was a bomber pilot in WW2, so Mike also grew up loving planes, only prevented from flying them himself due to his eyesite. However, he loved going to air shows, watching planes fly in and out of airports and air bases, building model planes and chatting anyone up about aircraft, in general.
He often vacationed with family on the central coast, enjoying Paso Robles wine. He was an excellent cook and bbq'er, participating in rib cook-offs with his teammate, Jeff Lawton, Sue and Lynn, and the numerous other "taste-testers" that would show up at Big Hat Days, etc. He and Sue would often host parties at the house, making his famous tri-tip, Sue's pilaf, and garlic bread.
He is survived by his two children, Tony and Katie; his grandchildren, Chloe, Ryker, Graham and Harper; his sisters, Diane, Peggy and Kelli; his nieces and nephews, and so many others who called him a second dad or brother. His ashes will be spread in the ocean in Cayucos to join his wife, Sue.

Introduced at a very young age, Mikey became the crazy Uncle or second dad for my entire childhood. I still remember jumping on the Husky with him in Kettleman City when I was probably 7 or 8 so I could go on the big rides with the big kids as I was too young and inexperienced to do the big rides on my own. Leaving Jefferson Elementary early and walking across the street because everyone was ready and loaded up to spend Thanksgiving in the desert. Mikey was larger than life, and more gentle than a teddy bear. He would pick you up when you fell, both literally and figuratively, let you know when you screwed up, and always sit in your corner to cheer you on. Some of my greatest childhood memories revolve around my parents relationship with the Stevens family and I am grateful for the time spent with them. From hot air balloons to rib cook offs, trips to the coast or trips to the desert, if the families were together it was a guaranteed good time. Thank you Mikey for always being there, for helping so many boys and girls grow up, and for just always being consistently you. We love you!!!!!!!

Always in your corner. Always there to make you laugh. There’s no one like him and there will never will be someone like him. I’ll think of you extra any time I play blackjack or drink a Shirley temple. Love you forever, Mikey - give Susie the biggest hug for me! I miss you both. ❤️Your squirrel girl

The family has lost its lrger than life comedian. His one liners, quick wit and sarcasm were the best. Some of my best memories with him are singing folk songs with him as he played his guitar.

"Mikey" is what we affectionately called him. He was everything that Katie said. In September, 2001, we had a small family reunion in Reno, for the Balloon Festival. He took great delight in watching ascend for the first time in an air balloon. As cousins, we knew each other well growing up and later through our mothers, (Ethel and Angie) who were world class comedians themselves. Mikey brought joy, a laugh, a compliment, or an original observation that got you thinking. He adored so many of Katie and Tony's friends to the point that I couldn't keep track of who were grandchildren and who were the friends. If you ever get to Aspen, Colorado, there is a park that is dedicated to John Denver. It will remind you of the wonderful person Mikey was. I am saddened to hear of his passing, but I will always have him close to my heart. Sending love to Katie and Tony and their families. Deb
