"His master replied, 'Well done! You are a good and faithful servant. You've been faithful over a little. I'll put you in charge of much. Come, celebrate with me.' Matthew 25:23

Michael Dale Russell, known to many as Mike or "Big Mike," was born on December 16, 1964, in Pasadena, Texas. On September 6, 2024, at the age of 59, Mike peacefully passed away in San Antonio, Texas, after bravely battling cancer. His journey on this earth may have ended, but the love and joy he brought to others will echo through the lives he touched.

Mike was a man defined by his faith and devotion to his family, friends, and community. He had an infectious energy, a heart for service, and a love for laughter that made him unforgettable. His passion for quoting movies and cracking jokes kept everyone around him smiling. Whether it was cheering for the Astros and Texans or hosting game nights, Mike was a natural at bringing people together. His deep-seated love for Jesus and the Word of God was evident in everything he did, and he especially enjoyed sharing his knowledge of Old Testament history in Bible studies.

A graduate of the University of Texas with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Mike had a diverse career path that included working for HEB before discovering his true calling in education. He thrived as a Mathematics teacher at Crestmont Christian Preparatory School and Comfort High School, where he also coached golf and track. Mike's reach extended beyond the classroom and sports fields—he was a mentor, guide, and role model to countless young people. He spent 13 years serving on the Board of Directors for Taking It To The Streets, furthering his legacy of service to others. Mike's desire to serve didn't stop at home; he also went on mission trips to New York and Arkansas, where he poured his heart into loving and serving others, spreading God's light wherever he went.

Mike's faith was unwavering, and the words of Matthew 25:40, Matthew 25:23, and Isaiah 52:7-8 were his anchors throughout life. His walk with Christ was a testament to his love for God, and he lived out his beliefs with kindness, humility, and grace.

Surrounded by loved ones, Mike is survived by his devoted wife, Rhonda Russell; his mother, Shirley Russell; his siblings, Debbie Russell and James Randall (Randy) Russell; his children, Charly Russell, Joey Russell, Brianna Chipy, and Devin Chipy; and his nephew, James Russell. Mike never met a stranger—his larger-than-life personality made everyone feel like family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Spring Creek United Methodist Church, 9200 Dietz Elkhorn Rd, Fair Oaks Ranch, TX, on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 10:00 am. A gathering for lunch and an opportunity to share stories will follow. Mike's love, laughter, and devotion will be remembered by all who had the blessing of knowing him.

As we say goodbye, we hold close to the words of 2 Timothy 4:7: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful." Mike truly lived this out, and his legacy will continue in the lives of those he inspired.

I attended the Service today. I think my emotion would have surprised Mike. See, Mike and I didn’t always see eye to eye on education policy or practice. In fact, we had several contentious conversations rooted in what should be vs what was. However, we both knew the other genuinely wanted the absolute best for our kids. We also knew we were on the same page with what really needed to be. And that was the love of Christ working in and through us. He would sit and eat his sandwich and pick my brain and I would think “what the heck did he do to his jaw? 😂”. Typically our conversations were centered on our kids. But he would also share about y’all and his abundant love and respect for his family was evident each time. I had a lot of respect for Mike as an instructor of knowledge. I was privileged to get to teach with him and man he knew his stuff. He really helped a lot of kids. Perhaps even one day they will have him to thank for helping them problem-solve as adults. His impact will definitely continue beyond our time. Last, Rhonda , I’m so sorry you lost your person. Remember God’s promise isn’t just for then, but for now too. May indescribable peace come upon you. - Katie

About 12 years ago, I saw something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. It was a Friday night in San Antonio Texas and I was serving meals to the homeless under a bridge. Over 100 of the city’s poor had lined up and another 30 volunteers were distributing food and clothes. One volunteer stood out. He was walking around with a big black bag gathering trash from those served. Preceding him were his two young boys, both holding a bag twice their size. These boys walked from person to person offering to take their trash as their dad followed beaming with pride. At that moment, I thought “someday, I will do the same with my kids”. I didn’t have kids. I hadn’t even met my wife yet! Still, this father’s leadership was profound. Mike Russell was that man and he was a giant of a man. A leader among men. We met regularly to discuss life, relationships, and the Bible. Every time I saw him, I was greeted with a wide smile, a huge laugh, and a solid slap on the back. Mike was personable and inspirational--always ready with a word of encouragement and some life lesson God was teaching him. Mike now knows by sight what we know by faith. It seems fitting that just three weeks earlier I had taken my two kids to serve the homeless of our city for the first time. I didn’t get to share with Mike I before he passed, but somehow… I think he knows.

I had the privilege of serving as Mike's pastor for a short time and to work on staff with Rhonda. Mike's passion for life and ministry to those in need always challenged me to move beyond myself and truly live for the other. Mike always recognized Jesus in others...that is how he led his life. This is the example he has left for those of us who are on this earth for a short time more. Thank you Mike and Rhonda. Mike, rest well and enjoy that peace that passes all understanding.

Mike had the unique ability to make you feel special. Every time I saw him he’d grin and say “good morning! It’s great to see you!” It warmed me to my core. I only started coming to early morning Sunday School because every Sunday he’d say “please join us for Sunday School…you’d be such a great addition.” Once I did come, he always thanked me and told me my presence was a blessing. He had that gift of genuine outpouring of love. I think it’s quite apropos that we were studying Exodus when Mike departed for the Promised Land. He will always be my spiritual Moses. ❤️

Mike made everyone feel welcomed. He never forgot a face nor a name. I loved catching up with him before serving on Saturday’s. I remember our conversation about his mission trip to Arkansas. He glowed when he talked about the work he did and the people he met, always giving glory to God. In one of our conversations I remember asking him if ever planned to retired and he said “I am retired.” I was confused cause I was under the impression that he was going back to teaching in the fall. When I questioned his response, in his wisdom and happy demeanor, he responded “When you do what you love, you are retired.” I laughed but I remember walking away with a new perspective on work and life in general. His presence was always felt, and his absence will be felt that much more. But to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, and our brother sure is rejoicing in the presence of our Lord. You will be missed but your legacy will live on.

I will always remember Mike's larger than life personality, and the fact that he always had a smile on his face. He was such a devoted servant of God and his faith shone forth in everything he touched. He will be sorely missed by many. We will always remember our time at Spring Creek UMC with Mike and Rhonda.
