Michael Muir
January 19th, 1947 - July 9th, 2020
January 19th, 1947 - July 9th, 2020
Spider saver. Harley rider. Challenger driver. Bad pun maker. Voracious reader. Gifted writer and guitarist. Music lover. Blues pianist. Songwriter. Avid historian. Smitten husband. Adoring father. Doting granddaddy. Faithful friend. Late-onset dog lover. Advocate for all. Coffee coordinator. Karate black belt. Unofficial therapist to anyone in need. Badass angel.
In a heartbreaking loss for family and friends, Michael Alexander Muir passed away on July 9th, 2020, due to complications from pneumonia. Michael was born on January 19, 1947, in Washington, DC, the first child of Helen and Alexander “Sandy” Muir. His youngest years were spent in the northern Virginia area, with his family eventually settling into a home on Main St. in Hillsboro. Michael was a member of one of the first graduating classes at Loudoun Valley High School, filling his time there as a devoted member of the Debate Team and the guitarist in a beloved rock band of classmates that would reconvene nearly 50 years later. Michael and his dearest friend, Bruce Brownell, spent their free time roaming around western Loudoun, often stirring up trouble on Bruce’s family farm. Michael’s beloved younger sister Marybeth, whom he dedicated his life to mentoring, often joined in their escapades.
After high school, Michael moved to the California northern bay area, where he attended college and had two daughters, Jane and Jennifer. Though he cherished the area for its stunning landscape and rich rock music scene, he returned to Loudoun in 1986 to begin a new chapter of his life. Reuniting with his best buddy Bruce, Michael served as manager of Market Station, one of Bruce’s many development properties, and lived humbly with not much more than his beloved Harley Davidson and his two guitars. Michael and Bruce continued their adventures together, riding their Harleys across the continental U.S., taking them to Alaska, and even shipping them to Melbourne, Australia, to ride around the country for six weeks exploring the Outback.
It was after his return to Loudoun that Michael met and fell in love with a young widow, Judith Romberg, and her two small children, Mac and Bess. He often described this phase of his life as his “second chance,” determined to be a good father and working diligently on improving both his physical and mental health. Michael openly shared about this journey, including becoming active in local 12 Step recovery programs and mentoring dozens of people in this capacity.
Michael was a veteran from the Navy, working in security and intelligence. He retired in 2014 from the Department of Defense, Defense Logistic Agency. In the last few years of his life, Michael appreciated more free time to read, exercise, play music, get fired up about politics with Judith, catch up with his kids, and dote on his many grandchildren.

I was thinking about Mike today and decided to try and see what he was up to--unfortunately, my hunt was much too late to reconnect with my good friend. He instantly connected with the alien mindset within me when we met many years ago, and that spark enlivened our conversations for the rest of the time we worked together. Ride well under fair skies, my friend. I miss you.

New Years 1989 - Our next door neighbors’ house burst into flames around 1am on sleepy little Main St in Hamilton. Our home was just a few feet away, and it was so windy that there was a high risk of the fatal fire blowing onto it. Without skipping a beat, Michael jumped out of bed and swooped up my brother and me, one of us in each arm, running down the street in the smoke and snow to safety. Not the first time he was our hero, and definitely not the last. So grateful to have officially parted with 2020, the nightmare of a year that took him from us so needlessly (along with hundreds of thousands of other lives)

One year ago today, Michael went to the hospital with what we thought was a bad asthma attack. What followed was nearly 2 months of pure, torturous, helpless hell (for him - I can literally only imagine; for my beautiful mom; and for our family), and THEN his death. The world seems to have come a long way in the last year, which is great progress, but stories like ours are still happening to families all over. Most of us are just too traumatized to talk about it. Please take this seriously and be a responsible human being: get your vaccine, wear your mask, and value human life - your own and others’.

Michael will be sorely missed by me and as you can see it’s taken a long time and many attempts to put it in words. Are friendship started at Loudoun Hospital and then I recognized his talents to follow me to Varec Inc., then as a Government worker GS employee for DLA J6F, the IT POC’s. His diverse talents, keen wit and sound advice, after his learning durin his life’s journeys as valued to me. Michael was a dear friend and I will always remember and honor his memories in my life! God Bless You through Eternity!

Judith has mentioned great things about her husband Michael, and based on what I just learned about him, it sounds like he was quite an amazing person! May he rest in peace knowing the positive impact he has made towards his family and friends. Judith, you and and his family are in my thoughts and prayers during these difficult times ❤
