Michael William Mann
September 14th, 1934 - December 8th, 2020
September 14th, 1934 - December 8th, 2020
If you crossed paths with Michael Mann at the post office, the store, or similar, he would most likely greet you with an uncommon kindness. A conversation would then ensue that would move naturally from pleasantries to things that matter. If you were blessed to know Mike, you would regard him as generous to a fault, more than willing to listen, and ready to pray for you with the power and comforting words of a psalmist.
Michael William Mann was born on September 14, 1934 to Arthur Mann and Ruth Moran Mann in Salinas, California. Though he spent much of his childhood in and around the Salinas Valley, he moved constantly during his elementary school years between locations and households. Some of his fondest memories during this time were of taking the train to visit his Grandma Moran in San Diego. She had a cheerful disposition and unshakeable faith, praying for him continuously.
When Mike reached high school with college ambitions, he told his father he wanted to attend the same school for all four years. The city was Watsonville and he soon stepped out on his own at 15, living in a rooming house, working several jobs, and attending Watsonville Joint Union High School. Upon graduation, he went on to obtain his BA and MBA degrees from Stanford University.
Mike's first job after his MBA was as a personal assistant to Edgar Kaiser Senior, president of Kaiser Industries, travelling the world by his side. This led to leading business ventures for Kaiser in Argentina. The latter job did not last long as Mike did not take to large corporate structure. He started his own business and focused on commercial mortgages and real estate development.
Mike moved to the San Ramon Valley in California in 1968, where he would spend the remainder of his years. As a successful young father, he was puzzled by an emptiness he felt in his life. While listening to a series by Pastor John MacArthur during a road trip, he was touched by the grace of Christ and placed his faith in Him, becoming an avid student of the Bible and the work of the Holy Spirit. He was filled with purpose and forever a changed man, and his natural gifts of hospitality and generosity took on a deeper meaning in light of the example of Jesus.
Mike is survived by his son Mike; son Bob and wife Michelle with grandchildren Nathan, Travis and Joshua; and son Steve and wife Sarah with grandchildren Kyle, Karis and Caleb.
Circling back, even near his final days with physical and mental capabilities failing, our Dad/Grandpa/Friend would respond to prayer requests with a clarity and directness that showed his spirit was very much alive, and is alive. We love him and will see him soon anew.

Legacy: It's what is left behind for all to remember. How quick we are to forget all the passing moments. It is now time to remember the lasting moments. The service to day was such a great testimony to Mike's role as a father, leader and provider. Three son's to follow a fathers influence in such a meaningful way is just amazing. You three men are a product of love, caring and teaching. You have allowed, thru your lives, a legacy to grow and influence the future. You are each very special. God can only be greeting Mike and smiling on each of you. Blessings!

I just watched the service for Mike. I have been so blessed by your family and your Dad. I loved him. His spiritI was a mirror of Gods love and patience. I remember when I started ushering and I was in his area. He helped me know what to do especially when it came to take up the collection. Also, when I would be on the counting team with him. He was ALWAYS with a smile and a transparant heart that reflected Gods grace. He will always be a warrior in my life and I am a better Christian because of the example he set for me. Blessings to you all during this difficult time of loss. Thank you for sharing your stories with us...you are a strong and beautiful family!

Thank you for sharing your father's life so beautifully. Your thoughts, memories, prayers, scriptures - all truly honored his extraordinary journey through this life and the deep faith that has brought him home. His love for you and his Heavenly Father will never end. Delight him by keeping your armor buckled.

Dear Family in Christ, I can not begin to express the great fun it was to be on the same Greeter’s Team at SRPC, With you dad. For years we hung out together at the front door. Mike was already there, door opened and hand outstretched before I joined him in greeting. His warm, welcoming smile, was the light of Jesus within him. Mike and I shared our week’s adventures. He especially loved hearing about my camping exploits, and sharing his adventures from the past. We had a standing joke as the music started at 10:00 am. He would say, “ well boss, can I go in”! He would smile and salute as I responded. Someday soon, I shall be entering the gates of Heaven. I wonder if He’ll be there greeting me and others with that smile and warm handshake. It will be my turn to say, “can I go in now?”

Mike you are a dear, humble, friend and no-nonsense brother in Christ. God blessed you with the gift of the Holy Spirit and all of us with you. Live on in His Glory. Mr. Mike Mann Sr., lived with uncommonly strong Godly inspiration. He was a disciple, devoted to family and a great American. For many years before Sunday church service each week when Mike was an Usher, and after he retired from that, we enjoyed our pre-Sunday service greetings, conversations about how God and first-hand experiences how the Holy Spirit was working in our lives. We shared stories from the distant past to just what happened over the previous week. I thoroughly enjoyed his Godly encouragement personally. As more of the congregation arrived I also reviled seeing him flanked by devoted family and friends who made a direct path to greet him with hugs and handshakes, or sit down next to him and share the Sunday worship experience with him. He was so loved and respected. He was an icon, a star, a SRPC legend and deservedly treated as a celebrity. Our paths also crossed in the community at places like Doctor’s offices where we would pick up our conversations about God, and also in passing on the roads of San Ramon. Mike was a force for what was “right”, and also the “right-of-way” while travelling with the traffic flow. I once had the opportunity at a 4-way stop sign intersection, to make a left turn in front of him. Well the car in front of Mike rolled through the stop sign, and then Mike following immediately rolled through the stop sign. I was clearly a signal blinking unmotivated driver. When I mentioned the “I almost ran into your Dad in a hurry experience” to Bob and Mike Jr. it was met with a big smile…and “that’s my Dad.” Your memory, bright eyes and big generous smile warms my heart dear friend.

Thank you for including us in such a beautiful memorial for your father. Cass and I have been reminiscing about the many memories we had together throughout the years at Lake Tahoe at the Antle Family cabin or in Salinas. Whether Bob and Mike were seated at the dining table telling stories of Stanford and the early years as young couples, singing praises of your father's brilliance in developing Alpine Meadows or putting their heads together about the future of the Picacho Pecan property, it was always a joy to watch them in action. What a beautiful sight it was, when we would come downstairs in the early morning to find Mike, Claudia and Sue reading the Bible and having discussions. We always believed if anyone would bring Bob to Christ it would be his lifelong buddy Mike. It makes our heart full to know they held their friendship very close to their hearts throughout their long lives. Your father was a very blessed man to have raised such incredible sons and have had the joy of the love of his legacy. Sending our love and prayers, Mike and Cass
