Michael Coulis

Michael Francis Coulis, of Toronto Ontario, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2023, at Sunnybrook Hospital Veterans Unit, under the compassionate, respectful care of the K2C staff. He was 99 years old and lived a full fascinating life.

Michael’s wife of 69 years, Ruth Eleanor Coulis, nee Porter, died 6 years prior. Mike and Ruth had 8 children, 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  

Mike was born in Uno Park, Ontario, and raised in Kirkland Lake. He was the third of 7 children born to John Coulis (Kulas) and Dorothy Coulis, nee Burchat. He survived all his siblings. In 1943, at 17 years old, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy Voluntary Reserve and served aboard the Kincardine of the North Atlantic Escort Group. 

Mike met Ruth on shore leave in Toronto, and after the war they married. After 69 years of marriage, Mike still lovingly referred to Ruth as his bride.

Mike joined the Metro Toronto Police Force May 5, 1947. He retired April 1, 1988, as an Executive Officer, after 41 years of “dedicated and faithful service.”

Despite having a demanding career, Mike was very involved in the care of his 8 children, and always showed his affection, love and respect for Ruth.

Mike was a devout Catholic, and in the days before his passing, he talked about being ready to see his “buddies” St. Peter and St. Michael.  

Michael was a great role model, strong in integrity and honour, and always willing to help. He was a good man, a good husband, a good father. He will be missed but it’s time to give him back to his bride, Ruth.
