Merl was a true Minnesotan - stoic and private, but also a Californian - a bit of a maverick, and not to be taken in by anyone's bullshit. He had strong principles, and when his high school principal tried to pull something shifty on him (long story), he actually punched him. The principal then told him he would make sure he never got a job, but Merl went on to college and got a degree in Architecture.

He entered the Army in 1959 and served in Korea. He then became a structural engineer in San Francisco and was involved in the engineering of some of the BART stations. His company sent him and the family to London to work on oil rigs in the North Sea so we all lived there for 3 years (with Bev and daughter Nina in Paris for the 3rd year, while he and daughter Julie stayed in London). He traveled a lot for work and would always bring back a trinkets from his travels, and stories about the customs in Japan or the fish in Norway. He traveled with the family too, with a memorable trip riding camels in Tunisia.

He valued his friends and loved a good fishing trip, a golf game, and a good glass of wine, and after a few glasses he would talk your ear off. He and Bev lived his last years together in Healdsburg, CA - wine country - a very appropriate place for someone who called himself a "wino."

He will be remembered for calling any container a bucket, challenging you to eat the eyeballs on the spicy Szechuan fish, telling it to you straight, and for being a stubborn, but gentle soul.

I remember Merl mostly from those London days. I was there for three years, 1976-79, running the Joint Company, ready for him to take over. Which he did! We got to know each other while enjoying those famous business lunches with our clients, a tradition we all had back in those days. I'm sorry I couldn't make Roger Lewis's recent reunion for one more dinner, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be ... Best Wishes Bev. John Burnell

embracing the game of golf at a later time in life left me with no expectations of my game, just looking to meet interesting people and have some fun. I joined the Healdsburg Men's Golf Club at Tayman Park about 15 years ago partly because they held monthly competitions so I could meet some of these guys; the very first one I was up against Merle in a stroke competition. Since we didn't know each other yet it was mostly quiet at first but when you spend over 4 hours outdoors with someone you get a quick idea of what they're like. I estimated Merle was about 16 years or so older than me but his golf quickly showed me someone who was dead serious about winning; he was always straight down the middle, hardly hit any bad shots and earned my respect quickly. in later years we played many friendly matches always the same golfer showed up so our little money bets filled his pocket usually; he was always so gentlemanly and sincere in his comments and suggestions when he'd notice your golf defects. Near the end of his life he shared many stories of his travels; I realized he was very special and wished I'd been able to hear more of those stories. I'll always miss his surprised gaze when an inappropriate remark was uttered during a golf game. Goodbye my friend

Can’t help thinking of Merl each time i pick up a golf club, a fishing pole, and a glass of wine or just remembered the abalone adventures. I can never forget the first time poke pole fishing near Fort Ross and him standing way out on a rock with waves crashing over. I thought this guy is a good swimmer or a little crazy!! After golfing with him for many years, i heard him tell a lot of stories, some more than once, ha! Ha! May God bless you my friend
