Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Matthew 5:8
Matthew Robert Stevenson, 22, of Wildwood, Missouri, left this world suddenly on August 18, 2020 as the result of a tragic accident. He was born August 30, 1997 in Wildwood, the son of Randall and Kelly (Frentzel) Stevenson. He attended St. John’s Lutheran school, then graduated Lafayette Senior High. He was beginning his senior year toward an Engineering Management degree at Missouri S&T, in Rolla. He was a member at Pathfinder church (formerly St. John’s Lutheran Church), in Ellisville MO, where he was confirmed. Matthew was active in Scouting, and had achieved his Eagle rank.
Matt had a kind and compassionate heart, and genuinely cared for the well-being of others. He was the guy who stopped to help a mother and daughter with a flat tire on his way to a job interview, served in a soup kitchen in his high school years and would pass a couple bucks to someone down on their luck. He was always there for his friends, day or night, routinely taking the role as ‘designated driver’, to keep his friends safe. He was an ever present shoulder to lean on.
Matt was young at heart, but had much wisdom. He appreciated old music as much as new music. Still enjoyed Mario Bros., but rode a loud Harley. Always wore his seat belt, but was caught doing nearly 100 mph on Hwy 40, just because it was a beautiful day, and his car was running well. He loved just hanging out with friends in the present, but had his future planned out in detail. He was self-confident and held strong convictions, but gave thoughtful consideration to the opinions of others. Even in the current culture, he had the courage to share his Christian faith with friends, and support them during difficult times. He cared about their future in this life and the next. Not into drugs or cigarettes, but opted for an occasional cigar. Liked Ginger beer as much as craft beer; Fitz root beer as much as a nice Cab.
Matt had a unique and wonderful wit and appreciated the humor in the classics, as much as he did that of Monty Python, Polandball, and bands like Ludo. Always wanted to road-trip to Lake Pontchartrain, just because it was in the song.
Matt was truly a one-of-a-kind friend, boyfriend, son, brother, grandson and uncle. Matthew is survived by his parents Randall and Kelly Stevenson of Wildwood; his sister and brother-in-law Robin (Stevenson) and Philip Castaneda; maternal grandparents, Arnold and Carol Frentzel, of Ballwin, MO., and is also survived by his niece and nephew, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

I was a close friend of Matthew, all through high school we would hang out and talk until the early hours of the morning. It’s been two years and I just found out about his passing today. I’m in disbelief. Matt was so smart and kind and I consider him one of my closest friends. He will be missed greatly. My deepest condolences for his family. My last time talking to him I told him that I wouldn’t see him for a while because I was working on getting sober. He was so proud of me. He is going to be so deeply missed.

I miss you so much Matt. You really had a remarkable impact on my life and I wouldn't be nearly as happy as I am today if I had never met you, even though I had to lose you. You taught me what it means to be a good person, and I will never forget the kindness you showed to a lost girl like me. I love you and I know we'll meet again someday. Happy Birthday ❤

It has been exactly one year since Matt and I met for the last time on February 1, 2020. I was leaving for China after I quit my graduate school at S&T, so Matt and his buddies decided to take me to a shooting range and have some fun before I left. I had always wanted to shoot a gun since it is illegal to do so in China, and my dream came true that day, which has been one of the most important and memorable days in my life. At that time there was a serious pandemic of COVID-19 in China and there was almost nowhere to purchase a face mask, but on that day, Matt and his friends helped me search from store to store in order to get me some face masks so I was able to fly home safely the very next day. They really saved my life and I can’t appreciate more for what they did. The first time when I met Matt was in August, 2018. We had been roommates for one year since then. I can’t say I knew him very well because I was introverted and we didn’t have many conversations even though his room was right next to me. But for me, Matt was always one of a few kind and thoughtful persons that I met in my graduate school life. Since I didn’t have a car, sometimes he would drive me to a store for shopping or a restaurant for dinner, for which I was very grateful. And I would also order a lot of pizzas and call Matt along with everyone else in the apartment for the “Pizza Night”. This picture was taken a week before I left during one of the “Pizza Nights”. From left to right are me, Matt, his buddy Luke, my roommates Luke and Aaron. I wasn’t fond of taking pictures so this was the first picture that I took with Matt, and unfortunately, the last one. When I first knew what happened to him, I was in shocked. Even till nowadays, I still have a hard time accepting the fact that he is no longer here with us. Therefore, I have always been sad visiting this page and had some difficulties writing things down, for which I feel very sorry. But I think today is so important to me that I really shouldn’t wait any longer. Goodbye Matt, you will always hold a special place in my heart.

Matt was one of my first friends when I came online around 2012. A memory I will cherish forever. It was our 2nd round in Halo Reach where I met Matt (Aviador Mateo.) He guarded me when we were playing capture the flag. Everytime we scored he looked at me and did the universal gaming sign of being friendly. The crouch and stand. So we played more matches without conversing. Until I decided to leave that lobby sending him a friendly message for being a kick butt teammate he was. He invited me to private party where we talked and so began a friendship that I will never forget. Skip to many gaming days where he made the [LOST] clan on Xbox. We were a short little group comprising of a handful of players. Fighting many bigger clans on many games. He was an amazing leader. Never abused his powers and treated all the people in the clan as equals. I remember one day in 2014 he added me on Facebook outta the blue and messaged me the dumbest things (Which looking back now we're really funny.) Matt and I would talk every other day about topics such as games, engineering, highschool, middle school, friends ect. Our favorite topic was about inventions and revolutionizing humanity for the future. But man did we have some real barn burners! My word that man can argue. 6 hours in and with all the yelling we still haven't come to a conclusion about an idea! Fast forward to our senior year we got so busy with one of our biggest milestones. We lost touch for about a year until I messaged him again then we reignited our friendship. He told me about his life and his dreams to be an engineer. We got back into Halo reach for a little bit. He was a good friend. He introduced me to many songs, video games, and even foods. We made a promise to see each other in the future. I thought I lost touch with Matt again in 2020. Sending messages on another platform and getting no responses. I always thought he hit another milestone and was busy. After a while I didn't realized he passed away. I logged into Facebook after a while only to find out he passed away nearly 2 years ago. He was like another bestfriend to me. He was a genius. He was also a leader. I miss you Matt you will always be my friend. I am sorry I am telling you this 2 years later. I Love you bro you were an amazing gamer and engineer. In high school I was in a history class with Matt. He knew I was struggling in the class, so he offered for us to study and prepare for the final together. I found out the day before the final that he didn’t even have to take the exam because he was doing so well in the class. He was just taking away his own time to help me with something that he didn’t even have to do. I did well on the final all thanks to him. I always really, really appreciated that gesture and kindness.

One could not have asked for such a great friend. Matt was an exemplary one, and did so much for all of his friends. I will always remember our time together and all the fun we had. I learned so much from him, and because of his absolute devotion to Christ I found myself turning to Christ too. I loved you like a brother and and not a day goes by that I'm not reminded of you. But because of what you've taught me and the gift of faith that you've given me, I know in my heart we'll meet again. Picture was taken mid march. We'd taken a day trip to a local quarry. He was an excellent photographer with a keen eye, so I thought a picture of the photographer himself was appropriate.
