Could I BE any more missed?
Matthew Langford Perry was born on August 19, 1969, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, to parents deeply connected to entertainment and politics. His childhood was marked by movement between the United States and Ottawa, Canada, where his mother served as press secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his father worked as an actor. After settling in Los Angeles for high school, Perry discovered his passion for acting and began pursuing a career in television.
While Perry worked steadily throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, his life changed forever when he was cast as Chandler Bing on NBC's "Friends" in 1994. His portrayal of the witty, sarcastic, and lovable character made him an international star and helped define television comedy for a generation. Over ten seasons, Perry's impeccable comedic timing and emotional depth contributed to making "Friends" one of the most beloved sitcoms in television history. During this time, he also appeared in successful films including "Fools Rush In," "The Whole Nine Yards," and "17 Again," showcasing his range as an actor.
Behind the scenes, Perry faced a profound personal battle with addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs that began in the mid-1990s. He spent years in and out of rehabilitation, a struggle he courageously shared with the public. In 2022, Perry published his candid memoir "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," which became a bestseller and positioned him as a powerful advocate for addiction recovery and mental health awareness. His honesty about his struggles helped countless individuals feel less alone in their own battles.
Perry remained active in the entertainment industry through theater, guest appearances, and producing work. On October 28, 2023, the world lost Matthew Perry at age 54. His legacy lives on through his unforgettable performances, his advocacy work, and the joy he brought to millions of fans worldwide.
