What a lovely Remembrance Matthew ! Thinking of you dearly and sorry that I cannot make the Celebration of Life gathering this weekend. My recollection is that I always remember you smiling. :) You enjoyed music and all we did in the department. If I recall you often called me "Uncle Ray". Just recently I have rekindled your memories as I again have experiences with your family, your brother Eliot and I have so much enjoyed getting to know and work with your nephew Teddy (he reminds me of you!). Rest in Peace

My favorite memory of Matt was back in December 2015. My husband, our two sons, and I were visiting New York to see The Lion King on Broadway. The show itself was absolutely amazing, but the real magic happened afterward—when Matthew gave us a special backstage tour. Our boys were captivated as he showed them how the props for the hyenas worked, along with many other costumes and sets from the show. Despite what must have been a long and exhausting day, he was so generous with his time. The thoughtful and loving way he shared the magic of the show—and his deep love for theater—created a memory we will treasure forever. Sending our love. Rest now, Matthew. You will always be in our hearts.

Teddy and James Keating

“Cup Song “ for Uncle Matt Lyrics adapted by James and Teddy *Written for their Uncle Matt when he departed for Portugal during Covid . Matt had spent months with the boys during remote learning…reinventing his life, in order to be with Federico in Portugal.. He became a student, taking design courses remotely from a design college in Cascais and was able to enter Portugal on a student visa. Everyday Matt would get dressed for 3am classes (5hr time difference) and as he finished up, the boys would arrive for remote learning with their Mimi and Uncle Matt. He was incredibly helpful during these trying months, with Kindergarten set up in the kitchen for James and middle school set up in the office for Teddy. Laughter and love peppered our days. They were really going to miss him when he was gone… You’ve got your ticket or the long way round, two bottle of wine for the way And we sure would like to be with you As you follow your heart this day When your gone When your gone We’re going to miss you when you’re gone We’re going to miss your amazing style We’re going to miss your happy smile We’re going to miss you when you’re gone You’ve got your ticket for the long way ‘round The one with the prettiest of views It’s got mountains, it’s got rivers It’s got sights to make you shiver And it sure will be perfect for you When you’re gone When you’re gone We’re going to miss you when you’re gone We’re going to miss you by your walk We’re going to miss you by your talk We’re going to miss you when you’re gone!

Our memories of Matt are of a beautiful smiling boy who was our son, Ian's, very first friend. What a wonderful gift to have such kind neighbors as we rented 68 E Main Street... and a joy to have Matt and E next door. We planted gardens and did play dates and blew up backyard pools. It was a charmed life for sure. Beth, having grown up in Houston and with parents who grew up in Brooklyn -- not to mention a mother who majored in drama... she always loved following the stories of Matt as he grew up. He touched on some of Beth's family ties in an amazing and magical way... little Matt was at the Alley! Our love to everyone in the Keating family. We will be out of the country in August... but wish everyone the loving time to share so many memories and joys of Matt's life. Beth and John Stevenson

To Matthew Light broke the sky Around the grey clouds A ray of sun Light as a thought Came gently down To bathe our eyes I thought of you Of all the times You drew a smile On his tired lips Of all the lies You put to rest By loving him Of all the things You could have done With a little more time You took him You took the world And you remade them For each other You made them Beautiful You broke the sky Now the night begins The long night Of which nothing true Can ever be said Now the night begins And he will hurt And he will cry And he will be lost sometimes But he will always find his way back Even in the darkest hours In the darkest places In the darkest thoughts For you broke the sky To bring him light And the taste of your smile
