Mathew Chennault
March 28th, 1987 - November 22nd, 2020
March 28th, 1987 - November 22nd, 2020
Mathew Joshua Chennault, ultimate friend, music lover, and momma’s boy (but in a good way), passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, November 22, 2020.
Mat was born in Dallas, TX on March 28, 1987. He grew up in Carrollton on the mean streets of Oak Hills where the kids wanted to play outside with each other and Mat just wanted to hang out with the adults and feed his constant curiosity. Needless to say, Mat never sat at the kid’s table, and it wasn’t just due to his 6’4” height.
Throughout his life, Mat built communities of friendship everywhere he was introduced. He was notorious for his sense of humor, easy smile, and contagious laugh – as well as his jokes that may not be appropriate for everyone, but were delivered effortlessly with his natural charisma. He was the ultimate friendship glue of a massive community of friends.
He was a master guitarist who organized jam nights across countless groups of friends, and orchestrated full compositions on multiple instruments with ease. He was even known to introduce staunch metal fans to new music genres - a masterful feat in its own right.
Mat was also very invested in his family. He always made sure to walk slower with his mother through airports while Larry, BJ, and Shelly were speed walking machines. He somehow managed to never lose his temper when he was volunteered to help the grandparents with troubleshooting their new technology. After the loss of his father in 2012, he stepped up to be there for anything his mother and sister needed.
Mat poured his soul into his music, family, friends, and collegues, but also had many other talents that made him the fun and charming individual that everyone loved. A sampling of Mat’s many gifts included:
- Changing his sister’s tires
- Growing facial hair like it was his job
- Taking care of all the women in his life
- Writing songs at the drop of a hat
- Being ticklish as ever
- Planning phenomenal vacations
- Finding the best concerts
- Wearing blue stripes like no other man can
- Jorts
- Being a culinary mastermind
- Being everyone’s support structure
- Falling asleep in any movie. Ever.
- Being the ultimate softball/kickball pickup
- Winning cheerleading championships
- Running leading roles in high school musicals
Mat is survived by those that were most important to him – his mother, brother and sister. He is proceeded in death by his father, Larry, and grandparents, Cecile and Sam Chennault, and Marian and Mike Cavins.
At the current time, there will be no formal memorial service to keep Mat’s friends and family’s safety in mind. Even though not having a service is hard for us, Mat was never a fan of a large gathering in his honor so we know he would be ok with this decision. That being said, please feel free to leave any of your favorite memories with Mat here for all to enjoy.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, we ask that you make a donation to the National Kidney Foundation in Mat's honor. This organization mattered dearly to Mathew as his father lost his battle with Kidney disease in 2012.

Matt “Moose” and I played baseball together growing up for many years, went to middle school and high school together. He was such a great person to be around. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing, too young and too early. Condolences to the Chennault family.

God put Mat in my life for a reason. He was not just a wonderful colleague, he was so dedicated, supportive and believed in me when I was starting my business. He was a truly genuine person who was so easy and fun to be around. I will miss his smiling face.
