Maryann Finke was born in Mount Vernon, New York to Albin and Else Forstrom. Her Father immigrated to the United States from Finland. Her Mother’s parents both entered the United States separately from Finland and met in their early 20’s.

She loved gardening, arranging flowers, reading (averaging 3 to 5 books a week) and gambling in Las Vegas - blackjack was her favorite casino game.  Maryann was an inquisitive, adventurous, strong willed woman.

Maryann supported Best Friends Animal Society, a 3700 acre, no kill sanctuary because of her love for all animals and the good work they are doing to train numerous shelters across the United States to also be no kill. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation to Best Friends Animal Society in memory of Maryann you can click on the link at the bottom of the about section.

We will miss Maryann.

As this Thanksgiving weekend comes to a close, I’m reminded of some thanks I gave a about a month ago… Thank you Maryann… …for the memories at Daune’s graduation in Daytona Beach when we met in the 80’s. …for the holiday celebrations in the Bronx when Daune and I came in from LA. … for the gardening tips when you came live with us; the tomatoes are wonderful. …for teaching me true Vegas Blackjack even though both of us were happier when I ran for drinks while you ran the table. For all of this Maryann, You’re stories will be with me for the rest of my life, You’re doggie will be with US for the rest of her life, You’re Daughter is with me and IS my life, Thank you.

Daune. I look forward to chatting with you about your mother at your favorite sushi bar next time you get to town. I am an animal lover too and more than happy to make a donation in her memory to the Best Friends Animal Society. Jim Heagy

Hi Daune, I hope you are coping with your loss. From the brief time I had the privelege to spend with Maryann, she made a lasting impression and I often thought of her. She really was something special and I was proud to have such interesting relative to look up to. She was so full of life and I got a sense that she was allways ready for an adventure. All the best for you in this trying time. Take care and much love from Finland.

I'm sorry I can't make Zoom happen. I should've planned ahead. While I didn't get as many experiences with her her stories and energy will be with me forever. I didn't get to see her much growing up thus proving , contrary to popular belief, that she could step away and keep her peace. But when the call came that her help was needed there was no hesitation, no hurdle too high. I remember thinking as a child, listening to my mother's stories that Aunt Maryann, Uncle Bertel and the rest must be something akin to superheroes. She did not disappoint. She was also fun and funny. I remember the 3 of us sitting on the bed in my grandfather's other bedroom late at night in our pj's giggling like kids at a slumber party listening to her tell stories. A surprising amount of which were about her need to pee at inconvenient times! She did so much and never tired. I'm glad to have had that and all the subsequent times with her. I am also happy to contribute to Best Friends animal society as it was my daughter's favorite charity and I even got to visit once.

Dear Daune and family, So sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. Maryann was a loyal, loving, lifetime, friend to George and me. She and I met each other in elementary school and remained best friends through the years. I was her maid-of-honor and godmother to her daughter. Our personalities were opposite, i was quiet and she was talkative (that never changed as anyone who knew Maryann knows). Maryann was blessed with a daughter who was always there for both her parents. Thank you Daune for all you have been to your mother through her illnesses. I hope the fond memories you shared will help you during these trying times. All I can say is how do you condense a lifetime of friendship into a few words. We will miss Maryann and I will close by saying goodbye our dear friend. One day we will meet again.

Dear Daune, I know your loss is unbearable right now. You gave your mom the greatest gift of all. You were with her and caring for her at the end. She was not alone. My memory of first meeting your mom was at her wedding and there was a mystique in my mind about my gorgeous cousin marrying a woman whose family was from Finland. I remember the wedding and what a lovely looking couple they made. And then, Lo those many years later, I met you and we became friends! Your mom was engaging, thoughtful, and generous and I enjoyed our conversations. Sending love to you for healing.
