Mary's Child

When Andersen wrote his fairy tales of wondrous fetch and carry, it would have saved him many a weary hour had he but known our Mary
The poem above was written for Mary by her grandfather C.J. Authorson when Mary was a little girl. And it remained true the rest of her life-- Mary always had a story...
Mary Rayes of Greenbush passed away on February 4, 2026, one month shy of her 93rd birthday. She was born Mary Veronica Brandt on March 7, 1933, the second of six children to Raymond Otto Brandt and Elizabeth (Authorson) Brandt, in Royal Oak, Michigan. She graduated from St. James High School, Ferndale, in 1951, and spent a year as a novice with the Sisters of St. Joseph in Kalamazoo. Although she came to realize her future would not be in the convent, Mary remained a deeply spiritual person. Mary enrolled in the nursing program at Mount Carmel Mercy College in Detroit, graduating in 1956. A year later she would marry the love of her life, a young chemist named Mitch Rayes, with whom she would spend the rest of her life. Mitch and Mary were blessed with six kids, three boys and three girls, and Mary stayed home to raise the family. When the kids were older Mary resumed her nursing career, working the midnight shift at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills as charge nurse for intensive care and then the surgical recovery department, until she retired in 1995. That same year Mitch and Mary sold their home in Livonia and moved permanently up north, to their get-away house in Greenbush, surrounded by the cedars and pines Mary loved so well. She always said green was her favorite color, and it showed from every window. Mary was an active member of the Sacred Heart parish in Oscoda, where she was a full-time Sacristan, taught catechism and brought the eucharist to those who were sick or homebound throughout the community. Anyone who knew Mary will remember her kindness, which was unconditional, her wit and humor, and her beautiful smile. She was a wonderful mother to her children, and a devoted wife and companion to her husband of more than sixty-eight years. She is survived, and will be dearly missed, by her husband Mitch, her six kids, Mitch (Dona Sinkevicius), Mary (Ghazi) Rayes, Joe (Sandy) Rayes, Patty (David) McNinch, Kathy (Tom) Lotter and Dan (Nancy Velez Ocasio), twenty-two grandchildren, and twenty great grandchildren.

My letter to Heaven- Dear Mom (& Dad those 2 words are inseparable-💖 ) You are right beside me today and everyday (you with your hot coffee and ice cubes- :)- ❤️ ) a sweet tender moment ...like so many other moments shared. Because of You and (Dad) I was able to become a nurse, the only thing I was certain of in my life. Being a nurse my dream. (That was just the beginning ...little did we all know.... (heart x3). (Thanks to Mary for bringing a human stray to your home :)- ) By the way I'm pretty sure that's how all this stray business I got going on now started. ❤️❤️❤️ Just know there are SO MANY memories of how You and Dad so freely loved and shared your home w/ me/us... and even had more love to share with so MANY. Your home was full of life. Mom- these are your words ' Each day brings a little love, a little hurt, a little laughter to each of us. Being together helps us all to love a little more, understand our hurts a little better & enjoy ourselves so much more. We all add so much to our lives. ' Love Forever Mom I love you Mom... I will forever be grateful, there is no other gift better to be given and kept, then the love You & Dad have shared with so many. - that is a ' beautiful truth ' and that it is - just like you...💖 With Love and Affection Always- Dona xoxo p.s. I'll think about planting carrots someday...😉ha wink

When I met Mama Maria, I had the privilege of feeling like her daughter, because she welcomed me with open arms and showered me with her love, affection, and attention. From her, I received the warmth of her home; she filled me with kindness, care, and heartfelt hugs. On sad days, she would hug me, offer me her silence to listen to me, shed her tears to share with a grieving soul, and, from the depths of her heart, give me words of encouragement to comfort me and give me new strength. We would kneel and pray together to God. She also shared her smiles with me to encourage and comfort me, and I could see in her blue eyes the reflection of God's peace and love. We shared many wonderful moments of harmony, laughter, and joy. Thank you so much, Mama Maria, for being such a kind, beautiful, and wonderful mother. I am certain that God has welcomed you so that you may be in His divine presence, sharing your beautiful smile and spreading love to all of God's children. We spoke different languages, but the language of the heart united us. Something funny about us is that at the end of our calls, she would always say to me in Spanish: "Hasta la vista, Baby." I will always carry you in my heart. With all my love, Ofe
