May helped my boyfriend plan a surprise proposal in her classroom. She got all of CES involved and I had NO IDEA! I almost ruined the whole thing but May convinced me to bring my class to her classroom. The next thing I knew there were a lot of extra people coming in and then in walked my boyfriend and he asked me to marry him! May was also a bridesmaid in our wedding! “Love makes life a paradise!”

December 2011. During the month of December May wanted to do something special for our teammate and her two girls, Sam and Sara. Their father was stationed somewhere in the Middle East and was not scheduled to return until the following Spring. So May being May planned a day with the Lattea girls. May, Tiffany and I picked up the girls, along with my then 5 year old Izzy and took them to the movies, Happy Feet 2, lunch and Michael’s for crafts. We then headed back to May and Tiffany’s and created fun crafts for Christmas presents for Stacey, their mom. Izzy made this one for me and just found it while cleaning her room. Again- another example of May and her crafty ideas where we always said, “Okay, let’s do it.”

May always struck me as so effortlessly cool. Every year on our vacation in Ocean City, I just wanted to hang out with her. She had a presence that just drew people to her, and she had an amazing ability to engage whomever she was speaking with and make him or her feel important. During college and a few years beyond, we didn’t see each other much. When I moved to the DC area as an adult, I was surprised to discover all of this was still true: she was still effortlessly cool, and I just wanted to hang out with her. I had thought that in childhood I was just a bit immature/insecure and was looking up to my older cousin. But no, she just had a presence to which people were drawn. We are all so lucky she used her power for good! We each got married and had our kids on a very similar timeline. I enjoyed talking with her about motherhood very much. Her love for her family as well as her humor were on full display in our texts and too-infrequent get togethers. I remember once discussing how many words our oldest children were saying and if it was “normal.” We were both, clearly, overthinking the situation. I had even made a list trying to recount all the words I had heard my daughter say, but I didn’t tell anyone I was doing that because I knew it was a little weird. As we were talking, May mocked herself for making a list of all the words she could remember Jack saying. I laughed and admitted to my list. It was a small moment, but it did make me reflect on my unwillingness to share as compared to her honesty. And, of course, we got a good laugh out of it. If Jack and Jo ever need to be reminded of how cool, caring, or honest their mother was, I (and many, many others) have plenty of stories for them.

May was my teammate my 1st year of teaching in 2013. She always gave me a hard time because I was a young 22 year old. One time we went to Dunkin together and I saw that Dunkin’ Donuts was giving away $50 worth of free coffee coupons for community heroes that were nominated. I told May that we should nominate each other so we could both get the free coffee coupons. She told me she agreed to the plan so I went back to my computer at work and submitted her nomination. 2 weeks later May was shocked when she got a stack of free coffee coupons in the mail. I told her it was part of our plan and I couldn’t wait to get my coupons in the mail. She turned bright red and said, I thought that was a joke. The nomination deadline closed. I never got my fee coffee coupon book. I think she did treat me once of twice though. What a great teammate! Haha

My sister and I grew up with the McGowan family. They were part of our St. Peter’s family. May was always a bright light for all. I was so excited when I moved to Catonsville and learned she was teaching here.
