Mary Helen, I remember the pleasant surprise in seeing you about 8 years ago. We didn't have time to talk for a significant period of time, however. I hoped to see you again and a few years later, Ted told me just to drop by the house unannounced and anytime. I took him up on the offer a weekend several months later. Although you weren't home, I intended to try again soon because I thought I had all the time in the world. But, I moved farther away from Scottsdale and the next visit didn't come to fruition. How foolish. It was painful to learn of your passing because I had so much to tell you about my journey from being a knuckle head to the man I am today. It sounded like we developed a common philosophy in politics and values. As children, we develop values without knowing it. As a result of so much time spent with you as a child I think responsibility, in its many forms, was sacred to you and I will remember the impact you had expressing that to me and your family. Of course, I can never forget your sense of humor and the memories I have of making you laugh will remain. Good bye Mary Helen.

No matter where I was in the world or where we were in our relationship, she was always my home base. I couldn't have done what I did without that or without her. I wish I had more time to know her as more than my mom, as she was so much more than that.
