Mary Catherine Burke was born on September 4th, 1955 in East St Louis, Illinois to Natalie Ann and John Edward Burke. In 1956 the family relocated to Tampa, Florida where Mary lived until 2019. A lifelong learner, Mary earned two master's degrees, one from the University of Florida in 1982 and another from the University of South Florida in 2000. Mary began her career as a History Teacher at Mulberry High school in 1978 before working for the Teen Parent Program at MacFarlane Park Center. In 1989 she gave birth to her daughter and only child, Natalie Marie Burke. She spent the next portion of her career as an itinerant health science teacher in the Hillsborough County School district educating high school students about safe sex practices and the prevention of the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. For the final 13 years of her career she worked as a Guidance Counselor, first at Middleton High School and then Gaither High School, from which she retired in 2015. In 2019 she moved to Port Townsend, Washington where she joined multiple clubs and became an enthusiastic hiker. Mary loved staying active and was always eager to start new adventures. In college she spent multiple semesters studying abroad in Utrecht, Netherlands where she grew closer to her mother's extended family in Germany. In her 20s she ventured into the sea becoming a passionate scuba diver, and in her 60s into the mountains becoming an avid hiker. She was a compassionate and creative individual who loved the wonders and diversity of the world. Even beyond her altruistic career choices Mary volunteered with many organizations throughout her life including the Hillsborough Education Foundation, and multiple mentorship programs including Big Sisters of America. She was a creative soul who loved writing novels, short stories, and poetry in her spare time. As a mother she was an inspiring role model of independence and strength and shared an incredible bond with her daughter, Natalie. Together, they traveled across the world to places such as Egypt, China, Japan, India, multiple countries in Europe, locations spanning the entire United States, and many more. Of all the joys in the world, one of her favorite pleasures was sharing a conversation over lattes with her daughter. Mary is preceded in death by her father John and mother Natalie. She is survived by her daughter Natalie Burke and son-in-law Keenan Sieg, aunt Catherine van Deven, uncle Joe Petrowsky, and countless friends. Mary was my "Big Sister" through the Big sisters program in Tampa during the late 80s. She did so much for me and taught me so much… how to play piano… scuba diving, biking… I remember a beach outing with Wolfgang once even. I'm so sorry to hear she has passed. She was a blessing in my early years.

Dear Nathalie, dear Keenan, I still can't believe, what happened. Me, Linda and Marisa are shocked and so sad. But I also can accept the decision, people doing about their life. This belongs also to our personal freedom. For me Mary was my american cousin. It was fun to have relatives in the US, with Mary, Nathalie I and later Nathalie II. I first met Mary in 1976. She came over from Utrecht, where she was studying. She visited me and my family and I remember a wild New Years Eve Party with her. At that time I was doing a civil service in the Hospital of Reutlingen and we spent the night together with a hundred other young people. Some weeks later I visited her with a friend of mine in her students flat in Utrecht. In the end we had contact to each other every decade, in the 80s in Tampa, then in the 90s she came for a visit took part at our housewarming party in our new built house with this little girl, named Nathalie II. More than 20 years later this Nath II was a young clever woman, full of life, when they visited us for some days in Seebronn. We had a lot of fun and wonderful discussions, travelling around to the Bodensee and Freiburg. It was great to have Mary as a cousin, and she will always stay deeply in our heart. We think a lot of her, and especially we think of Nathalie and Keenan. Be sure, we are your family. Wolfgang, Linda and Marisa

Dear Natalie and family, I was so sorry to hear of Mary's passing. Mary and I were friends in high school, and ate lunch together almost every single day. The Mary you described in your beautiful memorial is very much the Mary that I knew//seeet and kind and caring. I'm so sorry that I did not stay in touch with Mary. We lived in the same city. But I can see what a meaningful career she had but more importantly what a wonderful mom she was to you and daughter she was to her mother. It shows in the affection you have showed her and the love no doubt you will always have for her.

We are so sad for your loss, Nathalie and Kennan😪 We liked Mary very much, especially her curiosity about every thing in the World, and although the distance between us was great, we enjoyed to meet several times. Siggi, Volker, Fabio and Mino Ernst and Ella Senner
