TRIBUTE TO ENGR. MRS. MARY EJUOJO AKIODE, FNSE (19/02/1951 – 14/12/2020) I received the news of the demise of our distinguished professional colleague, Engr. Mrs. Mary Ejuojo Akiode, FNSE with trepidation. One would have wished that a woman with such endearing and humane attributes as she possessed would have lived longer to spread more love on earth, especially at these perilous times. However, we must submit totally to will of Almighty God in everything He does. Engr. Mrs. Akiode proved her love for Engineering in every endeavour she undertook. The testimonies of her course mates at the Faculty of Engineering in Ahmadu Bello University, as well as those of her colleagues during her sojourn as an employee of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria, bears credence to that claim. She gave so much of herself, intellectually and physically, to ensure excellent delivery on any assignment, just as she took to mentoring to instill discipline and imbibe the culture of excellence in Young Engineers. And she did all that with love and humility. At the level of service to the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), it is practically impossible to forget the tireless and personal sacrifices that Engr. Mrs. Akiode made in engaging in activities of the Society at the Branch level, which was the reason she was elected to serve as Chairman of the Lagos Branch of NSE in 1999. She was a focused Engineer with a high sense of professional ethics and integrity, with zero tolerance for unwholesome practices, nepotism and injustice. We are deeply delighted that this engineering icon consistently acted as our worthy ambassador in demonstrating impeccable commitment to duty as an Engineering professional. As we celebrate her fulfilled life, we pray that her legacies will continue to be a great source of comfort to her family and to Nigerian Engineers. May Her Soul Rest in Peace. Signed: Engr. Babagana Mohammed, FNSE President, Nigerian Society of Engineers

SLEEP IN PERFECT PEACE It’s sad and painful to come to terms with the reality that you have changed accommodation. The reality that I will not see you again; I will not hear your voice again on this side of life hurts. You were born into that lowly village, Unale, with a lowly background. Despite these limitations you lived a fulfilled life out of cheer determination. You served your generation creditably well; you accomplished your goals and left indelible marks. You ventured into a field supposedly reserved for the male folks; and you shun so brightly and carved out a nice for yourself. You were a champion. Now that you have answered the call of your Maker; now that you have gone the way of all the earth; we will greatly miss you. Our loss is Heaven’s gain; and it’s better for you. Our consolation is in the fact that you are only sleeping; you will wake up on the resurrection morning when the saints of God shall rise. My beloved sister, sleep in perfect peace at the bosom of our loving Heavenly Father until we all meet at the feet of our REDEEMER, our LORD, and our SAVIOUR, to path no more. GOOD NIGHT; SLEEP IN PERFECT PEACE. ENGR (DCN) FRIDAY OJONE UKWELA

Tribute to Engr. (Mrs.) Mary Ejuojo Akiode, my Mentor: The sad news of Engr. (Mrs.) Mary E. Akiode's departure came to me as a destabilising shock. An embodiment of calmness, humility and kind heartedness, she was my boss and mentor per excellent in NEPA. So loving and caring, she took me more like a younger brother than a subordinate in office. Immediately after my 2-year pupilage in 1983, I was posted to Commercial Department, Headquarters in Marina, Lagos where Late Engr TAM Balogun was the Director. As a Senior Engineer then, Engr. M. E. Akiode was my immediate boss. She so much tutored and nurtured me, building confidence in me on the job as I accompanied her on many load surveys of prospective bulk customers. We both left headquarters in January 1989 when she was posted out as a District Commercial Manager and I was posted to a different District as an Undertaking Commercial Supritendent. I was directly under her again from January 1993 to May 1996 when she was District Manager, Shomolu and I was Undertaking Manager, Ketu. Under her guidance and mrntorship, I was rated and awarded the Best Undertaking Manager in Shomolu District for 1995. Very intelligent and soft spoken with broad smile as she was, I couldn't have asked for a better boss. Unfortunately, my early exit from NEPA in October 1996 truncated what could have been a much deeper working relationship. Having lost contact before the advent of GSM, I later traced her through facebook and we were both excited hearing from each other again. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen. Engr. Tribute to my roommate. Engr (Mrs) Mary Akiode, nee Ifah, and I shared a room in Dan Fodio Hall, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria We were both studying engineering though in different departments, she studied electrical engineering while I studied civil engineering. Back in our days, there was usually not more than one female student graduating from the engineering faculty each year and Mary was a set ahead of me, she graduated in 1974 and I graduated a year later. My roommate, as we fondly called ourselves then and whenever we met afterwards, was quiet and had a relaxed temperament. Our room was always peaceful, I do not remember anytime we had serious issues as Mary was easy going and minded her own business. She was a diligent and studious student and had no time for campus frivolities. After graduation, she served her NYSC with National Electricity Power Authority (NEPA) and was posted to Ibadan where my family resided and during my holidays, I enjoyed taking her around and showing her interesting places in the city. She was employed at NEPA after her NYSC and was posted to Afam Power Plant and later to Ilorin where I was serving my NYSC and that gave us another opportunity to interact, especially when she gave birth to her first child, Tamunoimi. Engr(Mrs) Akiode was hardworking, purpose driven and paid great attention to details, it was no surprise therefore that she excelled in her career at NEPA, retiring as a General Manager. We kept in touch over the years but lost contact few years ago and I had been asking any senior ex-PHCN staff I met about her and none gave me definite information. It was therefore a rude shock to learn that she passed on to glory in December!! We have every reason to give thanks to Almighty God for the gift of her life and for all He helped her to achieve in her lifetime and the wonderful legacies she left behind. I pray God comforts and upholds all loved ones she left behind and keeps memories of her ever sweet, in Jesus name. Amen Adieu my roommate.! May your gentle soul rest in peace.
