Always keep your dignity and be true to yourself.

Marjane Satrapi was a storyteller in the truest sense — a woman who used ink and image to bear witness to history, to exile, to love, and to loss. Born on November 22, 1969, in Rasht, Iran, she grew up in Tehran in a politically engaged household. Her parents, engineer Ebi and dress designer Taji, were vocal opponents of the Shah's monarchy and raised their only daughter to think freely and to resist. That defiant spirit would define everything she ever made. Childhood for Marjane was shaped by revolution. The Islamic Republic rose when she was nine, and the Iran-Iraq War followed shortly after. She watched family friends imprisoned and her beloved uncle Anoosh — a dissident she adored — executed. In 1983, her parents made the agonizing decision to send her to Vienna, Austria, for her secondary education. Alone in Europe at thirteen, she navigated homelessness, depression, and a brutal displacement from everything familiar before graduating from the Lycée Français de Vienne. She returned to Tehran at nineteen, earned a degree in visual communication at Islamic Azad University, and eventually made her way to Strasbourg and then Paris — where she found her artistic home at l'Atelier des Vosges, a collective of French comic artists who encouraged her to tell her own story. That story became Persepolis. Published in four volumes between 2000 and 2003, and translated into more than twenty-four languages, the autobiographical graphic memoir turned her childhood in revolutionary Iran into a work of profound universal resonance. In 2007, she co-directed the animated film adaptation with Vincent Paronnaud, winning the Jury Prize at Cannes and becoming the first woman ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Over the following two decades she directed five feature films, from Chicken with Plums to Radioactive, her biopic of Marie Curie. In 2023, she coordinated Woman, Life, Freedom, a collaborative graphic work by seventeen artists responding to the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. In 2024, she was elected to France's Académie des Beaux-arts. She was also, above all, a woman who loved deeply. After a first marriage in Tehran, she married Swedish actor and producer Mattias Ripa in 1996. Their partnership was the anchor of her adult life. When he died on April 8, 2025, at the age of fifty-three, she posted simply: "Because I have lost the love of my life." She founded a cinema foundation in his name to support young international filmmakers in Paris. She died in Paris on June 4, 2026, at the age of fifty-six. Her family said she had died of sadness. Marjane Satrapi left no children, but she left millions of readers who recognized themselves in her pages — and a voice that insisted, with irony and courage and unwavering clarity, that no one is alone.

Marjane Satrapi understood what every great filmmaker acknowledges, that the most personal story, told without flinching, becomes the most universal.

A great artist who turned her Iranian childhood into a universal tale. With her childlike perspective, her irony, her tenderness, her inner demons, the author created a moving world with which readers identified.

I was saddened to hear of the death of Marjane Satrapi. Persepolis made a huge impact. The repression of ordinary women in a theocratic regime, the secret rebellions, the depression, the courage scraped up to carry on; but I only wrote about it, while Marjane Satrapi lived it.
