Loved Ones

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Marie Elizabeth Oliver, on Monday May 17th, 2021 in the Victoria General Hospital, Centennial Building, Halifax after a short yet courageous battle with cancer.

Marie is survived by and will be deeply missed by her children, Carla (Gary) Salsman, Alberta; Mark (Shannon) Bezanson, Eastern Passage; Nicole Bezanson, Dartmouth, Christine Bezanson, Ontario and step-son Jonathan (Michaela) Oliver, Prince Edward Island, also her ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She will be remembered by her beloved sister in law Joanne Surrette and nieces, Kim MacIntnyre and Kandra Surrett-Aucoin and nephew Brad Surrette. She will be deeply missed by her best friend of more than 50 years, Ann Delong (Naugler).

Born in Purcells Cove, Halifax, Marie was the daughter of the late Basil, Sr. and Norma Surrette (Gilfoy). She was predeceased by husband of more than twenty-five years, Frank Oliver. She was also predeceased by brother Basil, Jr. Surrette and sister Carol Surrette.

Marie spent her career in customer service devoting over 43 years at Sobeys Inc. in a variety of roles but spent the majority as an Administrative Manager. She will be remembered by so many colleagues and customers for her sweet smile and pleasant mannerisms. She was always greeting customers with a ‘How are you today?’ and made lasting friendships along the way.

Marie loved to travel and spent so many trips with her ‘travel buddies’ and such great friends. From Florida, New Orleans, New York, Spain and France, she loved to see all the sites. Exploring the architecture, museums, culture, music and experiencing the food.

If you were invited to Marie’s for dinner you would never be disappointed by her culinary abilities. She loved to cook and she loved to experiment with spices that she collected from her travels. Cooking was her biggest passion and sharing her recipes with friends was one of her most favourite things to do.

We want to thank the amazing staff, RNs, LPNs and doctors at the Victoria General Hospital, Centennial Building, 6A Thoracic department for their loving care of our mother. It always comforted us knowing the care everyone gave to her in her final days.

Donations in memory of Marie may be made to either the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia at https://www.mentalhealthns.ca/ or to the Nova Scotia SPCA at https://www.novascotiaspca.ca/

Marie was a kind and wonderful lady. I will always remember how she supported our son when he worked at Sobey's. Her daughter, Nikki, is an incredible friend (sis) to our daughter. Our prayers are with the entire family.
