Marcia's Sibling
Marcia "Marcy" Ellen Stout
April 17th, 1948 - October 7th, 2024
April 17th, 1948 - October 7th, 2024
Marcia “Marcy” Ellen (Petersen) Stout, beloved mother, sister and friend, passed away on October 7, 2024 at the age of 76. Born in Nebraska in 1948 to Charles and Ruth Petersen, she moved with her family to San Diego in 1960 where she attended Monterey Heights Elementary School and Palm Junior High School. After graduating from Mount Miguel High School in 1966, she became a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She worked at Mercy and Kaiser Permanente Hospitals, where she met lifelong friends and the love of her life, Terry Stout.
Marcy loved caring for others and never forgot to send a heartfelt card or gift to her loved ones. She had a quick smile, a wonderful laugh and loved the color pink; she wore it often. She also cherished the yellow roses that Terry would bring her on special occasions.
Marcy and Terry were married in August 1973 at Lemon Grove Lutheran Church. They shared a love of music, camping and time spent with family. Terry was paralyzed in an accident in 1980 and Marcy became his primary caregiver while also caring for their two young daughters. Terry preceded her in death in 1996.
In her later years, she relocated to the Sacramento area to be closer to her daughters. She was living in Roseville at the time of her death.
Marcy is survived by her daughters: Kari Stout-Smith (Sam Smith), Kelli Smith (Zach), a sister, Kathy Dowding (Steve), two grandchildren, Sawyer and Stella Smith, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She will be remembered fondly and missed dearly.
Marcy will be laid to rest with Terry at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. The family plans a celebration of life in the spring. To honor her memory, the family requests that donations be made to: the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) or the Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA).

What is your favorite memory shared with Marcia?
I was going to college in San Diego, and I was anxious to be an actual ‘college student’ who goes somewhere for Spring Break. Neither Zach or my sister could take time off from work so I convinced my mom to go on a road trip with me. Hearst Castle came up in one of my classes and I wanted to see it - so off we went, just mom and I. The drive to San Simeon was beautiful and Hearst Castle was definitely interesting, but my fondest memories are the funny, slightly infuriating moments like me asking mom to guard the broken gas station door and her spacing out and letting a truck driver walk in on me. We sat in silence for an hour after that. 😆 Or going out for Mexican food and margaritas our last night, but then not being able to sleep because she was snoring so loudly in the bed next to me. I let those things bother me in the moment and I probably acted like a brat and gave her grief about them, but now I just appreciate her willingness to go with the flow, do whatever, whenever, as long as she was with me.

How did you meet Marcia?
I first met Marcy back in 1994, at a time when her daughter, Kari, and I formed a deep friendship through our shared love and involvement in pageants. From the very beginning, Marcy welcomed me with open arms, immediately making me feel as if I were one of her own. There was an undeniable warmth in the way she embraced people—a kindness that seemed woven into everything she did. She had this beautiful, radiant smile and a laugh that could light up an entire room. And while her laughter was infectious, it was her strength and fierce love that truly defined her. I’ll always remember how deeply she cared for her daughters, how she poured every bit of herself into them. When her beloved husband, Terry, passed away, I had the privilege of standing by her, Kari and Kelli, during one of the hardest chapters of their lives. The grief was profound—Terry had been their heart and their rock, and his absence left a space that could never be filled. Watching her endure that loss, I witnessed not only the depth of her sorrow but also the incredible resilience she possessed. Though the longing for Terry never faded, Marcy showed a strength that was truly remarkable, finding purpose and determination to keep going for Kari and Kelli. Through all of life’s highs and lows, Marcy’s love for her family remained constant and unwavering. Her spirit, her laughter, and her incredible love will forever stay in the hearts of all who knew her.
