Today represents the fifth year that we remember our best friends and siblings. We cannot change the tragedy that has occurred but we can re-define it. Maddie, Kaylee, Xana, and Ethan did not deserve what happened to them on this day nor did they deserve for people or internet sleuths to associate their names with the title of a homicide case. These four young and beautiful people were taken from this world for essentially no reason. The person that caused this horrible tragedy will not receive any recognition in this speech the students will. Madison May Mogen was a highlighter, her mom wrote the world and she made it brighter. Kaylee Jade Goncalves was the light to the world's darkness.Xana Alexia Kernodle was her family's sun to their moon. Ethan James Chapin was a person who could light up a whole room just by walking in it They all could. These were not just names in a headline; they were real people who had hopes, dreams, and futures that were unjustly snatched away.

I didn’t know Madison, but since the day the news broke about them tragically being ripped from this world the 4 of them have never left my thoughts or my heart. Madison seemed like such a sweet kid who loved to have fun and had her whole life ahead of her I’ll be forever sad that she never got to do or see all the things the world has to offer. My thoughts and prayers are forever with her patients and close friends. RIP

I did not know Madison personally, but I wanted to reach out to let you know how much her story touched my life. As a college student myself when I learned about the tragedy in Idaho, hearing about Madison and her friends profoundly impacted me. It made me much more aware of my surroundings, and it changed how my peers and I looked out for one another on campus. Please know that even from afar, Madison has not been forgotten. Her memory continues to inspire a spirit of care and awareness among students like me. I am holding your family in my thoughts and sending you continuous love and strength
