Eggy earned that nickname as the primary supplier of eggs for Elderslie, Niagara, Johnson, and all the way to Montego Bay. Eldest child of the late Dorell Thompson and Estella Brown.

He came from a bloodline defined by longevity. Aunt Avis lived to 98, and her sister to 106. Louis died at 99 ½ yrs old.

Raised in Niagara by his devoted grandmother, “Mumma” the local midwife who taught him a lot as he attended school irregularly. By his teenage years, Louis was already focused on building a future. He raised goats, pigs, and cows and planted yams. He learned the trade of sawing wood from his uncle, Caleb, and was so determined that he purchased his own piece of land at just 17 years old, the same land where he would eventually build his home and raise his family.

In July 1950 at age 23, he married Miss G (Louise Scott), This union was blessed with 11 children 6 boys 5 girls. His spiritual journey was a transformation for the family. He was a Deacon of the Elderslie’s MZSA-COG; he was respected for his firm faith in God and for his kindness.

In his final years, he lived in Mandeville. His legacy will live on through his children, 39 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

May his soul rest in peace.

Did you ever learn something about Louis that surprised you?

From the time I was seven until I was eighteen, he stepped into a role he never had to take on, but he did it without question. He raised me with patience, discipline, and a quiet strength that never asked for recognition. I understand his sacrifices more deeply now, and he gave me something priceless: stability, love, and a sense of belonging. He was a cricketer in his former years, and most fittingly, his life reflected the spirit of the game he loved. He lived 99 years, 99 not out, in a long, remarkable innings marked by resilience, consistency, and heart. Even at the end, he never quit; he finished his innings with dignity. While I find peace knowing he is now free from sickness and pain, my heart still wasn’t ready. I wasn’t ready to see him leave the field. No amount of time could have prepared me for that moment. The memories we shared are some of my greatest treasures, and they don’t end with me. I still taste those early‑morning fried plantains, still hear his voice teaching me lessons I didn’t fully understand at the time. He warned me not to jump out of the back of the car or tie a rope to the gate post and swing from it, and of course, I did it anyway, breaking my leg just like he said I would. Even that memory, painful as it was, became a lesson wrapped in love and patience. And then there were the moments that showed his joy, like the last‑minute run to Elderslie for ice cream after the shopkeeper had already gone to bed. Only he could knock on a door that late and walk away smiling, ice cream in hand. Y’all know he loved his ice cream. Those small adventures, those quiet acts of delight, are pieces of him I will carry forever. I will carry his stories forward and share them with my children, so they will know the man who shaped me. His legacy lives in the lessons he taught, the love he gave, and the memories that will continue to echo through every generation that comes after him. Thank you for being my father when I needed one most. Your innings may have ended, but your legacy lives on. 99 not out, forever.

Keron Crossman - Johnson

Uncle Lewis is one of the calmest and most pleasant person I have ever encountered. He was a Christian, a great father, husband, uncle and friend to many and a stalwart in his community. His kindness and dedication to family was unmatched. He had a full life, is missed, and lives on in the lives of his children, wife, siblings and the extended family. May his soul rest in peace🙏🏾🖤🤍😥🥀🕊🕊 From: Keron Crossman-Johnson (Niece)

How did you meet Louis?

I remember Dear Uncle Louis as a pleasant dignified God-fearing gentleman with an engaging handsome smile. He and Aunty Girlie were an exemplary couple and together they never missed an opportunity dropping by to visit us in Jointwood, us doing the same when passing through Niagara going to see them in Saverent. As a little girl just migrated from the UK these were brief moments of happiness as for my late parents, his sister Barnell and my dad Amos. The lively bible discussions of the the men were equally matched with the ladies time together catching up with the latest news and supporting each other. I admired his patience with my ever inquisitive questions eagerly seeking to fit in with the Jamaican dialect and way of life. Although I never carried on the traditional visit, modern technology provided a window of opportunity, via WhatsApp to meet his growing family and listen to the stalwart encouraging confidence and prayers at the ripe age of 99+ years. On the behalf of myself and big sister Callys and our families our heartfelt condolences to the family... RIP uncle Louis until That Day 💜
