Leigh Ray
August 29th, 1954 - April 25th, 2021
August 29th, 1954 - April 25th, 2021
Leigh Gardner Ray, our beloved Mom, Nana, Sister, Aunt and friend, passed away in Monterey, California on April 25th, 2021, at the age of 66. Leigh was born in Salem, Indiana on August 29, 1954 to parents Elinor (Troth) and Chris Gardner. Growing up in the small town of Paoli, Indiana, Leigh was a light to all who knew her. Described as “the outgoing one,” she was a best friend to her sister Linda and a lover of pets like their dog Fella. Leigh graduated from Paoli High in 1972. She continued her education at Purdue University and then Indiana University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1976—the first in her family to do so. After college, Leigh moved to St. Louis to begin her career in marketing. She pioneered her way into the “boys’ club” and enjoyed great successes. Leigh acquired early on the skills and confidence she would later use in entrepreneurial endeavors, helping to start and run several small businesses. In 1980, Leigh moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and put down roots in the Town of Danville. There, she became a mother and took great interest in raising her two children, Erin and Christopher. Leigh assisted and encouraged Erin and Chris in pursuing their interests in various activities, sports, and schooling. She was passionate about her children’s education and pushed and motivated Erin and Chris to work hard and excel. It didn’t matter if it was Friday night SAT prep class or cramming for the AP Biology midterm, Leigh was there to support and encourage her children. With her help, Erin and Chris were both able to pursue their educational and professional passions. Leigh also loved animals and provided years of loyal care to her furry companions Spats (a clever Sheltie) and Tucker (an incorrigible Wheaton Terrier). With a fondness for coastal living and love of the ocean and the beach—her happy place—Leigh eventually left Danville to relocate to the ocean breezes of Monterey, California. Leigh was preceded in death by her “Mother and Daddy,” Elinor and Chris Gardner. She is survived by her son Christopher, her daughter Erin (Clark) Jones, her six grandchildren, Clark, Henry, Bobby, Ava, Wyatt and Jacob Jones, her sister Linda (Tom) Traylor, niece Erica (Luke) Fewel, and her former spouse David Ray. An open-house memorial will be held on May 29th from 3-5pm at Mission Mortuary Chapel, 450 Camino El Estero, Monterey California.

Leigh was always friendly and so very nice. I remember going to the Pismo Beach reunion with my son Matt. He was 11 years old I believe which would make it to 2000 reunion. Debbie and Teresa could not make this reunion because of Teresa's commitment to High School cheerleading. Matt and I flew out early to spend some time before the reunion with Leigh and David at their home. Leigh insisted that Matt & I use her car for our time there and to use for the reunion. It was fun for us because it was a VW Karmann Ghia convertible. We enjoyed driving around California in a convertible. That was so Leigh. Needless to say she was looking out for others. She will be missed.

We are so sorry to hear about Leigh’s passing. She was a good friend and we worked together supporting many of our children’s activities. Our prayers for comfort go to Erin and Chris.

Leigh and I were very close friends and I remember worrying about her when she didn’t come to school for a few days. My mother suggested I call her and check to see how she was. I learned she had been diagnosed as a diabetic and started reading everything I could about her disease. I told her it would be okay and she would be okay. We hugged and laughed together and we never spoke of it again. When Fella died she fell apart at school and the teacher told me to go with her. Again we hugged and cried together. She was a dear friend and I will always remember our time together. Her folks took us to the State Fair once and her favorite ride was the crazy mouse. She made me ride it at least 6 times! She loved to laugh and have fun. I already miss her!

Chris and Erin, we are so sorry to you, and your's mom's friends and larger family, for such a loss. I didn't get to cross paths a lot with your mom, but whenever I did see her over the years, she was full of grace and class. She was personable and caring...a lovely woman. Our love to you.

Leigh and I were high school friends. She was beautiful inside and out. I remember her dog fella and cat jeepers. I also adored her mother and father.. I am so sad to hear this. Prayers for you.
