The journey has been completed.

Lawrence "Clutch" McCutcheon was one of the most complete running backs of his generation — a man whose toughness, reliability, and quiet dignity defined everything he touched, both on the field and in the front office. Born June 2, 1950, in Plainview, Texas, he grew up with deep roots in the Texas Panhandle, a hometown he returned to once or twice every year for the rest of his life. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1968 and went on to Colorado State University, where he became the first player in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season — accomplishing it twice, with 1,008 yards in 1970 and 1,112 in 1971. He finished his Rams career with 2,917 yards and shattered more than 20 school records. The Los Angeles Rams selected McCutcheon in the third round of the 1972 NFL Draft, and he quickly became the cornerstone of head coach Chuck Knox's "Ground Chuck" run-first offense. From 1973 to 1977, he led the Rams in rushing for five consecutive seasons, earning a Pro Bowl selection every year during that span. His most breathtaking performance came on December 27, 1975, when he rushed for a postseason-record 202 yards on 37 carries in a divisional playoff victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. A second-team AP All-Pro in 1974, he was also named All-NFC in 1977. By the time he left the Rams after the 1979 season, he was the franchise's all-time leading rusher with 6,186 yards. In Super Bowl XIV, he threw a 24-yard touchdown pass on a halfback option — a moment as daring as any in his career. Beyond football, McCutcheon was a devoted family man. He married Mina Cooper, who went on to coach the Plainview High School girls' basketball team. Together they built a remarkable three-generation NFL legacy: their son Daylon played cornerback for the Cleveland Browns from 1999 to 2006, and grandson Dyson McCutcheon carried on the tradition as a defensive back at Middle Tennessee. After retiring as a player, McCutcheon returned to the Rams in 1982 as a scout, eventually rising to Director of Scouting and then Director of Player Personnel, a post he held until his retirement on August 18, 2016. In all, he spent 42 years with the Rams organization and 44 years in professional football — mentoring generations of personnel staff with the same down-to-earth character that teammates had always admired. Lawrence McCutcheon passed away on October 23, 2026, at age 76, following a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease, with his family at his bedside. He is remembered not only for his records, but for what he stood for: dependability, humility, and an unshakable love for the game.

I loved having him on the team. You just knew when we snapped the ball, he was going to carry it and he was going to get it done. I trusted him a lot as a teammate.

The contributions he made as a player as well as a talent evaluator in our personnel department have been invaluable to this organization. We will miss 'Clutch' being around on routine basis, but he will always be an important part of our family.

Los Angeles Rams

His impact on this organization spanned generations, and he embodied what it means to be a Ram. A five-time Pro Bowl running back and once the franchise's all-time leading rusher, he later served in our front office as a scout and director of player personnel. His legacy is woven into the fabric of our team.
