Lawrence I-Kang Kao was born on March 17th, 1975 to Vera and Leo Kao at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Maryland.  At the time of his birth, Lawrence was considered a medical miracle.  He was born 11 weeks premature and weighed only 1lb. 14oz.

As a child, Lawrence was energetic and social.  He would often walk up to strangers and try to initiate a conversation.  Lawrence participated in several activities growing up - Cub Scouts, skateboarding, Tae Kwon Do, and lacrosse.  He looked up to his father and became an avid reader at an early age.  Lawrence was also heavily invested in pop culture and the latest trends in music, films, food, and art enabling him to strike up conversations on a wide range of topics.

Lawrence grew up in Columbia Maryland and lived there until his late 30s, he spent brief stints in Washington, DC, Las Vegas and Torrance, California.  It took a little while before he found a desired career.  Lawrence fell in love with his first job in the kitchen of Clyde's, a lake front restaurant in the heart of Columbia.  From there on, Lawrence worked on cuisine he was passionate about - French, Japanese, and Chinese food.  He worked at notable chains such as P.F. Chang's and for Think Food Group, run by Jose Andres.  Lawrence was a line chef at Din Tai Fung at the time of his passing.

Lawrence is survived by his mother and father, as well as his aunt Janice and cousin Rick(y).

We are all shocked and saddened by his sudden passing.  We will miss his energy, enthusiasm, and warmth.  Please feel free to share pictures, stories and any other thoughts you may have as we celebrate his life.

We plan to hold a virtual memorial service for him at 4pm PST on Sunday, January 12th 2025.  For those of you live in Southern California and are interested in joining us in person, please reach out rick.chang@alum.mit.edu for additional details.

Ricky I want to take a moment to commend you for the remarkable way you honored Lawrence’s memory. Organizing a visual memorial service that celebrated his life with humor, positivity, and heartfelt stories was truly inspiring. It’s no small feat to turn such a painful loss into a gathering that uplifts and brings people together. Your ability to focus on the joy Lawrence brought to others and to share those moments so openly speaks volumes about your strength and love. It’s a reminder to all of us to cherish the time we have and to celebrate the lives of those we hold dear. Thank you Rick for the wonderful service yesterday. Lawrence deserved it. I just wanted everyone to know that Lawrence’s friendship meant more to me than words can describe. The material things are replaceable however his friendship is not. He was a very good friend and need more people like him in this world. I will always think about the good times we had together. You will never be forgotten. There is a lesson to be learned here. Make the most of each day you have in this lifetime, keep in touch with your dearest family and friends, and make time to physically go to see them. This is something people will always remember in a positive way. I wish everyone the best during this difficult time. -Vincent Lau and family

What is your earliest memory of Lawrence?

The first time I met him was when he was 2 years old. A very vivacious, energetic and lovely boy. I always remember his birthday of 3/17 every year even though I never sent him a gift. My belated husband was one of Leo’s childhood friend. Time flew and when I contacted his mom I was making plans to visit them soon. Since I love cooking and enjoys Japanese food I was going to ask him to share his talent with me. When I heard the sad news , I was so shocked. He taught me a lesson of never procastinate, then I would have a chance to have met him.
