We are deeply sad to say goodbye to our dearest Ms. Laura, who we lost a week ago today. Ms. Laura was a teacher at JJDA from 2011-2022. Even after retiring, she never truly left us. She continued to Zoom into classes, watch competition livestreams, offer critiques, and constantly push us to be our very best, even from afar.

JJDA was a big part of Ms. La's life, but she was an even bigger part of our studio's story. Joining us in year four, she transformed our technical program and elevated our dancers to a new level of excellence. Her influence shaped what JJDA is today.

Ms. La's love of music and her determination to share her passion for artists from Tchaikovsky to Pink Floyd, will live on in every student she taught. Every time her dancers hear the notes of a favorite Ms. La song, she will be with them again in their minds and in their hearts.

Thank you, Ms. Laura, for your legacy. WE LOVE YOU TUTU and will carry you with us always.

_____

Every Christmas, Ms. Laura encouraged our dancers to write notes of appreciation to the JJDA faculty. As so many of you have reached out over the past week with your heartfelt words, memories, and stories about Ms. Laura, we realized it's our turn to do the same for her.

This page is a collection of love notes - a place where all of your anecdotes, smiles, and moments can live together. our hope is that her family and friends can read through these messages and feel the impact she made for years to come.

Please leave your memories below. (Sympathy gifts are not necessary. I cannot seem to remove the option from the page.)

Thank you everyone.

Love,

Jill

How did you meet Laura?

I became friends with La, around 2010. She was my neighbor, friend, and my daughter's first ballet teacher. She was one of the best people, I have ever known. I am saddened by discovering her passing.

The Rocha family is incredibly saddened to hear the news about the passing of Ms. Laura. We have so many wonderful memories of Ms. Laura teaching Nadia ballet. She was wonderfully patient and kind with Nadia's gentle nature. She encouraged her to be her best in class and in her private sessions. We will forever be grateful to her for helping to instila sense of confidence and a continued love of dance.

Ms La was so special to so many people. I feel so blessed to have been able to have her as a teacher for many years. She changed the way so many of us looked at Ballet. She not only taught us Ballet, but taught us so much about our bodies and also introduced to a variety of music. To this day, everytime I hear Come on Eileen I think of you! Rest easy Ms La ❤️ - Lissy

Oh My Dear Ms. La…. I think the reason I am writing now, and so late, is because this is all so sudden, and quite honestly, does not feel real. I have so much to say, and I think I have finally found a SMALL amount of words to say to you, and about you. You are one of the most influential people in my entire existence. You have given me such “pearls of wisdom” (as you’d say), that I have taken with me in my every day life. Anybody who knows you, knows how passionate you are and how much you love music, dance, baseball, movies, crafting, dogs, but most of all… your students. I am beyond honored to have had you as my teacher. Your knowledge for dance, and even beyond was always something I admired. A “pearl of wisdom” from you that remains engraved in my brain will always be, “if you want to be a better dancer and stand out, always learn the other side, and add a beat to it.” I’d be rich if I had a dollar for every human I said those words to (and always gave you credit for it). Your words, and not just those, have carried me through my professional dance career, to this DAY! As soon as I learn a piece of choreography, I always flip it in my brain, to be prepared, and I genuinely think of you saying that in my head!! You have impacted my dance life tremendously, and I thank you for playing such a pivotal role in my training and professional dance life. I started my message earlier by saying how honored I was to have you as my teacher. But now, I’m sharing how honored I was to have you as my friend and someone I could always talk to. Each and every time I had Ballet, I knew I couldn’t wait to run to you to tell you a new story about a pup (or mine), or an accomplishment at school, or a song that made me think of you… And it’s because you always made me feel like you cared about anything I had to say. THAT is something that I will never forget because it was one of the traits about you that made me feel so loved and welcomed by you. Even if it was the silliest story, so tedious, you sat there and listened to every word. Little do you know how much those conversations meant to me. I thank you for being someone I could always confide in, always cry to, and always laugh with. I loved sharing every dog video, every Sal Valintentti video, every time songs played in the grocery store or on the radio that made me think of you. Our bond grew so deep, that we kept in touch frequently after I graduated from my time at JJDA. You forever stayed in touch, congratulated me on my accomplishments and was always one of the first to celebrate me. You always said Ballet wasn’t my thing, and I may never be a prima Ballerina. But you never doubted me ONCE. You always told me I would make something of myself in dance, and I should never ever stop because I was special. YOU made me feel special. Thank you for being my friend and for making any space you were in a safe space. This is just a SMALL blurb of the amazing woman you are. I could keep going on and on, but all of a sudden the screen is getting a little blurry from tears, as it often does now that you are someone my heart is grieving. I hope you feel celebrated and I hope you realize how your light never dims, even in times like this. If anything, it’s shining even brighter if possible. I pray you’re smiling from above with your pup reading all of these messages. I hope you’re able to see the impact you’ve had on so many hearts and souls. You’re so beautiful, on the inside and out. I pray you’re my Ballet teacher and friend in every lifetime. I love you Ms. La, rest in the sweetest peace and give us all the signs whenever you can. P.S. I will also never forget how you never missed a birthday, not once. Seeing all your emojis and silly pictures on my birthday always made me smile. I hope every birthday from here on out you send me something special. ❤️

Ms. La was truly one of the sweetest souls I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. I was led by her grace throughout my childhood, and her teaching went far beyond ballet. I think of her every day in my adult life. When I think of the things I am proud of in myself, they often trace back to her. I will forever be inspired by her grace, patience, wisdom, and gentle heart. Her love and passion for ballet are what made me fall in love with it too. Oh, how I wish we had more time together so I could continue learning from her, but for now I will carry all the beautiful things she taught me and keep them alive in everything I do, knowing she is now guiding me from above. From her amazing music choices and fuzzy socks to her soothing scent of lavender, she will be deeply, deeply missed. I will continue to look up to her all the days of my life. Until we meet again, my sweet one. May you rest in eternal peace, Ms. La. I love you so much, and I miss you more than words can say. 🤍

Ms. La, What an absolute sweetheart. She had impeccable music taste, always smelled great, and loved everyone at the studio. She had no shortage of funny stories, movie recommendations, and ways of sharing her love of ballet in fun and engaging ways. Coming in as an untrained 10 year old boy, Ms. La was such a welcoming force in discovering my love for dance. She had me show my pointed feet to the older girls, having them multiply her encouragement of me, an awkward kid who had no idea what he was getting into. In my very first private with her, I twisted my ankle on the base of the barre because I sickled, and I can still imagine her gentle caution before she went on to tell me a funny story that would cheer me up. This trend of kindness and encouragement was a through line of Ms. Laura's, always watching our dance competitions and keeping up through text long after graduation. Ms. La has left a remarkable influence on me, much like she's had on anyone who's had the pleasure of meeting and training with her. Throughout my later years at the studio, Ms La was struggling a lot, but some of my fondest memories of her are from that time. We missed her a lot when she was out for surgeries or because of an intense migraine, and we were ecstatic when she came back. One of the videos I'm sharing is from one of these periods where we made her a dance for the holidays. When she came back, she didn't have as much mobility as she did before and I remember many nights of carrying her bag and locking up the studio for her. Lucky for me, this meant I got to help out one of my favorite people and chat with her for even longer after class. Although she had less ability to dance, Ms La always loved making her crafts and kept that up long after her surgeries. She always had on her dangly home-made earrings and frequently had multicolored hands from tie-dying. Another picture I'm sharing is of glow-in-the-dark crafts she made me to bring with me to college. I took them with me and continued to talk with Ms. La whenever I took on new art projects. These were some of the many ways she showed her thoughtfulness and generosity to her lucky students. In the Fall of 2023, I asked Ms Laura to advise a piece I choreographed for Princeton University Ballet. I had just had an injury (that I'm almost fully recuperated from) and was going through a lot personally at the time. Collaborating with Ms. La was one of the best experiences I could've asked for and I'm especially grateful for it now that she's gone. We integrated her famous plies into the piece and got to talk about everything from ballet technique, to choreographic choices, to telling stories, to movie recommendations. She shared so many pearls of wisdom, some of which are in the video I attached to this post. We talk about a whole bunch, but I hope it serves as a reminder of how wonderful Ms La is. There a few stories of hers in there that were new to me. Even just hearing her voice and seeing her expressions make me very happy sad. The piece we made had themes of death, afterlife, and spirits that I've been thinking about a lot lately.( https://youtu.be/jSOvBW_FMEs?si=jKBFK1FJtf3w-Xu7 ) Like everyone else, I was devastated to hear Ms La passed away, and still am. Though, I can't help but think about how happy she must be to be reunited with her dog Winkie again. I also imagine her to be pain free and dancing her heart out. She loved ballet so much and I like to think she now gets to enjoy it to the fullest again. I also hope she can somehow read and hear our messages of how meaningful and loved she is. Ms La is truly a gem and her legacy lives on in all of us. Love you all, Dany
